Yakuza “surprise announcement” coming next week

Sega has promised a “surprise announcement” related to the Yakuza series next week.

Drawing on Japanese sources, Gematsu reports the announcement will be made sometime after 5:00PM Tokyo Time on August 18.

The announce will come during an event at which Sega will announce the results of a character poll.

There’s no indication of what the announce may refer to, but it’s hard not to speculate that the PlayStation exclusive series will make the jump to PS4 sooner rather than later.

The latest game in the Yakuza series, Yakuza 5, released in Japan in December but has not yet been confirmed for Western release; historically, there have been lengthy delays in getting the games west, and then only in limited release quantities.

The most recent western release was Yakuza: Dead Souls, a non-canonical spin-off of Yakuza 4 called Yakuza: of The End in Japan.

The Yakuza series was created by Toshihiro Nagoshi, who also made Binary Domain. In 2011, Sega renamed the team behind both games in honour of the Yakuza series, one of the few console bets it has refused to ease up on.

I hope it’s that Yakuza 1 + 2 HD collection are coming west on PS3 and not god awful Wii U :P

This is probably the classic Sony game that the company was teasing for re-release earlier this week. The first two games were PS2 exclusive if I recall.

They should make a futuristic/steampunky Yakuza game.

I’m guessing, since this is being done in Japan, it’s a Yakuza VI for PS4 announcement.

@6 I’m of a similar opinion. If the announcement is for Japan then I wouldn’t expect it to be [just] about news of a game coming to the West.

I’ve finished both Yakuza 1 and 2 and really enjoyed them. Fun combat. Silly melodrama. Ridiculous soap opera endings. Strong Shenmue feel. I’ve got both 3 and 4 waiting to be started but.. so many games.. so little time.

I also really enjoyed Binary Domain so am confident I’d like whatever Nagoshi’s got lined up next.

Was there a Yakuza cross over game in feudal Japan? I seem to recall one being announced ages ago.

It’s a fun series, and as JM said, very similar to Shen Mue in a lot of ways.

@8 – Yakuza V already came out for PS3 in Japan. It was a big success.

Unfortunately, if they were going to announce it for the West, I doubt they’d do it in Japan. They aren’t Hideo Baba.
