Nintendo to launch free-to-play game not based on Pokemon or Mario IP

Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata said during a financial briefing at E3 Nintendo will release a free-to-play title during this fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2014. Details weren’t provided, but he did say it wouldn’t be based on the Pokemon or Mario franchises. The news was broken by industry analyst David Gibson over Twitter and confirmed later by Nintendo. The transcript from the meeting will be available next week on Nintendo’s investor relations website. Via Polygon.

So… free-to-play set in the Legend of Zelda universe? That’s the only one I can see it being if it’s not Pokemon or Mario, with Pokemon being the most logical choice if it could have been one of those. Legend of Zelda contains multiple races, as well as dungeons, and the games have NEVER really been about Link but about the experience of adventure, so an online multiplayer game fits. Especially after Four Swords. I can’t imagine Metroid ever being free-to-play because that whole universe is so tightly packed into whatever Samus Aran does with an emphasis on going to one sprawling, isolated, claustrophobic place.

Of course, I’m assuming free-to-play to mean “this is an MMORPG or something of its kind.” They could be approaching the free-to-play model in a way I’m not thinking of.

They could be doing a free to play version of Animal Crossing on facebook or something completely out of character.

@2: I think I just figured it out, and it’s so simple and obvious.
