The Last of Us gameplay welcomes you to Lincoln

Friday, 17 May 2013 17:58 GMT By Sam Clay

The Last of Us is only weeks away. Classically, the press have been lucky enough to play some segments before the big release. After the break, we have some new gameplay to go along with all the coverage.

The footage is taken from a sequence in the game where you visit an empty town called Lincoln. We’re assuming it’s Nebraska, but considering there are 29 states with a town called Lincoln, we won’t assume anything for the moment.

Still, it looks a lot like Nebraska, according to Steph.

As well as the above gameplay, Dave has been playing a small chunk of the game, check out his thoughts on it through here.

Naughty Dog’s actioner releases June 14 worldwide exclusively on PS3.

  • Borderlands “Superbowl” ad is pretty, uh, unusual

Borderlands developer Gearbox considered taking out a Superbowl commercial, apparently. @6 While that’s entirely true, I completely agree with him.

My biggest concern with this game since the day I first saw has been that it would be nothing more than Uncharted with a new setting and cast. Unfortunately, this seems to be shipping up to be the cast.

I thought the exact same thing when I first saw the game, but after I looked at the gameplay more I realized that they aren’t even in the same genre. This reminds me of a third person bioshock more than uncharted imo

While I’m being realistic (which is an alien concept to Sony fanboys), and never really ‘troll’ (which is an alien concept to people on the internet), the demo looks like an utterly boring eye candy.

#16 Again, I’m realistic. And Uncharted was a dull, linear, scripted Tomb Raider with an annoying protagonist (the latter is debatable depending on your attitude).

nathan drake is such a douche. not feeling the uc cast at all. i played all the uc games, enjoyed them, forgot them. nowhere near my top 25 this gen. great ride these games and kind of fun. i just don’t think they are essential must play games.

As a PC Gamer, without being fan of any console, i think PS3 is way better than 360 , the reason is the perfect exclusive games like this one…

Nah, a recycled engine, half-recycled gameplay (what’s not recycled is extremely derivative as usual for ND – see all their previous games) and smoke and mirrors instead of graphics to make outdated hardware look good.

Also, hypocritical cheerleader of people like tea shows his true colors.

He’s a troll because 95% of his contributions are swivel-eyed attacks on anything related to Sony or anyone who he thinks might not agree with him that Sony is worse than a paedophile ring. That’s why few other people posting negative opinions get called trolls – because there is a difference between trolling and expressing an opinion.

    #29 2 years ago
  30. monkeygourmet

You can’t argue that Naughty Dog aren’t a very talented team, but like God of War, the experiences are very, very linear.

I love me some Uncharted, and will play through this, but I am not under the illusion it won’t be an almost ‘on rail’ experience.

Graphically, it’s always easier to make things look nice if you limit the amount of freedom players have. Uncharted was very good at ‘pointing’ you in the direction of nice looking things and ‘explosive’ scripted events.

From a gameplay perspective; the new Tombraider easily surpassed Uncharted for me. Better control, more freedom, better combat and graphically held it’s own considering it was multi platform AND had more open environments.

Uncharted 4 will really have to shake things up, but I fear they will use the power of the PS4 to make it look pretty, but it’ll still be scripted.

I hope they have the balls to make it more ‘open world’ but I doubt that will happen.

    #30 2 years ago
  31. sg1974

@30 Movies are also linear. I don’t understand why many gamers see that as a negative trait in gaming. ND excels at producing games that play like movies, with possibly the best character performances going, and many gamers like it which is why they sell well. If you don’t like linear games you don’t buy them – just like if you don’t like role-playing games you don’t buy them.

    #31 2 years ago
  32. Da Man

What’s your point, sd1974? Most of yours are MS aimed vitriol or some little bitter barking. (That’s aside from the moments when you hypocritically cry for tea and the rest of Sony camp)

Nothing opinionated about platforming being automatic, or qtes being used more than re4 and Shenmue combined.

    #32 2 years ago
  33. sg1974

Really? That’s funny. In the last few weeks alone I’ve said how much I loved Alan Wake, that I quit GT for the far superior Forza (now the best cosnole racer), that Halo is by far the best FPS ever, that I am looking forward to the Durango reveal and that the new console is promising, with the likelhood that MS’ reveal will beat Sony’s announcement of PS4, and I’m hoping to buy one (as long as I don’t have to pay subs).

I have also posted some negative Sony comments, including criticism of the Vita, and Killzone, TLG and GT.

Selective memory troll who makes crap up has selective memory and makes crap up.

TEA? Yup, I did ask why he got banned when trolls like you roam free.

    Off you troll.

    #33 2 years ago
  34. Da Man

Yep, really. So what if you said Halo is a good game somewhere?

I think Gears of War is a terrible game, I also explicitly stated my attitude towards Fable. So again, what’s your point, fanboy?

Consistently, deliberately, cheer Sony fanboys (that one being the biggest example of your hypocrisy). Hypocritically attack positive MS comments and negative Sony ones.

You really don’t need to write a thesis here.

You need to replace the ‘g’ with a ‘d’ for obvious reasons.

Anyway, like I said it’s hard to look forward to ND games. Because ultimately what they do is just recycle the same shit but take away a few things here and add a bit there. It’s just the same derivative entertainment from 90s, but way more accessible.

  35. sg1974

  36. Beta

The only Uncharted similarities I can see are that it’s third person, story driven and has a male protagonist.

It has a completely different tone to Uncharted which was more Indiana Jones esque and based around bombastic set pieces.

And to attack it for being linear is silly. Not every game has to be open world and I have never understood why some see this as a negative.

    #36 2 years ago
  37. Da Man

    Er, righty.

So in other words you admit to being here solely with the aim of getting me banned by deliberately going off-topic.

You clearly don’t have much work other than videogames anyway.

    #37 2 years ago
  38. monkeygourmet

    @36

It’s fine, but in the case of Uncharted, that linear blockbuster vibe will clearly bring series fatigue IMO.

Uncharted 3, while great fun was really starting to show the series weak points.

Obviously this is a new series, but people are already drawing comparison to Uncharted, especially in the style of gameplay.

Sometimes a series needs a bit of a shake up, Uncharted is one of those, again, my opinion.

I would also say the same of Gears of War and God of War. We’ve seen all they can offer in their current guise, and the series have been getting worse throughout the generation.

Why anyone would want a series like Uncharted to get too samey is beyond me. I hope that ND manages to create a mildly open world for Uncharted 4, but still retaining the trademark flair. Maybe a metroidvania style would suit the exploration?

    #38 2 years ago
  39. Beta

I agree that Uncharted was getting a bit familiar, and though I loved it, I don’t want it to become a cash cow or get stale. Which is why I’d like them to move on from it.

Outside of the things I mentioned, I personally don’t see many similarities.

*Not that I’m trying to be argumentative, just stating my opinion :)

  40. stretch215

Uncharted was a clunky tps with gorgeous graphics.(for console). The gunplay and platforming were terrible, along with the A.I. (All my opinion, obviously). A very “average” experience with a shiny coat of paint. So, if graphics is all you (obvious) sony “fans” are worried about, you’re on the wrong platform. You might want to look into buying a pc. Also, @28 +100. Edit: and before the insecure sony “fans” team up on me, I own a ps3 and have played all 3 uncharted games.

    #40 2 years ago
  41. stretch215

Also, you sony “fans” are WAY worse than the nintendo guys ever were. They (mostly) just stuck up for ninty. You weirdos are attacking people with differing opinions. I think you guys(?)

  47. monkeygourmet

    @39

I also like the fact it looks like they have another game and IP in the works.

This game is a little similar to Uncharted IMO. It looks like they are doing all the ‘adult’ stuff they couldn’t put into Uncharted and tried to create a new game with it.

Still be fun though, I love Naughty Dog and am not dissing this. I can just see why people think it looks similar.

The animation, although fantastic looks very ‘Nathan Drake’ and the climbing bits look similar also. They created a style though, and I understand it’s hard to get away from that.

Uncharted is the comedy blockbuster, this looks like they are trying to bring the emotion. We will see how that pans out, but im sure it will be fun.

One thing they tend to do well is the ‘virtual co-op’, Sully and Drake for example, that gameplay was always fun because of the wise-cracks. I hope this follows a similar vibe with the 2 characters.

  48. monkeygourmet

Also, Stretch is right about Sony fanboys.

I started posting on this site purely because of TEA’s crazy Sony propaganda. Was just lurking before that.

Although he was just messing around in a lot of cases, Sony fans got a little mental with the late release of the PS3 and the crazy promises from Sony.

There’s some simple factors that caused this:

    1. The belief that Bluray helped create better gameplay

    2. The belief that the PS3 was a lot more powerful than 360 & TEH CELL RULEZ

    3. The belief in the infamous E3 showreel (Killzone 2, Motorstorm etc…)

    4. The belief Sony are purely for the gamer and free online wasn’t just because the console cost a shit load at launch and they were playing catch up.

A lot of people enjoy Sony games and the console, but the die hard fans never really got over any of this stuff being bullshit.

Basically, they still would defend that original unvieling of the PS3 and all the mistakes that went with it.

There are still ALOT of people around like that. I’ve never seen Nintendo or MS fans act as crazy as some Sony fanboys.

I get that you’re not dissing it dude, and yeah there are similarities art and animation wise and gameplay at a basic level. I just don’t see that as a negative. Not saying that you do :)

    #49 2 years ago
  50. Da Man

The similarities are everywhere, it’s the same third person a/a with a few tweaks here and there, and indeed a new setting.

Surely I might as well state that the only thing comparable between Resistance and Halo is the first person camera..

Yes, there was no game called Tomb Raider, the platforming is as deep as the Core Design developed games, the shooting is as intricate as Halo multiplayer and there’s nothing wrong with being unemployed at 40 and playing videogames all day. I’m trolling, obviously.

  51. Lengendaryboss

^Well of course there are similarities between The Last Of Us and Uncharted, being built on the exact same although heavily modified Naughty Dog engine, but the question i pose to you all is that necessarily a bad thing? I mean there are some changes the AI is much smarter than the AI in Uncharted, Zombies, New Settings, Pushing PS3 to its limits and Scavenging and Survival.

    #51 2 years ago
  52. Da Man

It’s not really a bad thing, it’s just that people who dislike Uncharted or weren’t impressed with it obv aren’t looking forward to this one..

    #52 2 years ago
  53. Lengendaryboss

    @Da Man
Interesting, but besides being developed by the same team how exactly is people disliking/not impressed with Uncharted even remotely related to their opinion on The Last Of Us.

    #53 2 years ago
  54. Da Man

You’ve already addressed that issue with the previous comment.. Because there’re glaring similarities.

Why do you guys continuously assert the ‘opinion’ thing. Because it pains to realize a product might actually be inferior?

  55. Phoenixblight

Getting mad at a developer for doing exactly what they have done through their entire career thats like getting mad at Michael Bay for not doing a Kubrick film. Its childish and unrealistic.

    @54

No, becacuse it IS your opinion and no amount of trolling is going to change that.

    #56 2 years ago
  57. Lengendaryboss

@Da Man Because an opinion is someone’s view on something and there are different opinions on something amongst various people, when brought together cause a clash leading to an argument. Its like me saying COD is a yearly recycled POS that hardly innovates and usually someone will refute this opinion.

    #57 2 years ago
  58. monkeygourmet

    @55

At some point they have to change though.

Whether new hardware helps that process or the team shifts it’s style, it’s nice to progress and move idea’s forward.

Otherwise we just end up with ruined franchises, Assassins Creed / Gears of War for example. That is my opinion obviously, but just look at reviews for most of the sequels recently. All going down, and people complaining about the same old shit.

Childish isn’t even a word to describe this. Just look at Mario for example. Just because the games often look similar and contain similar themes, because it’s gameplay focussed rather than graphics and story, you generally get consistant quality and the review scores and feedback tend to show that.

When a game uses graphics as it’s main hook over gameplay, too much repetition and sequels really show the limitation in it’s structure.

God of War, Gears. AC & Uncharted are prime examples of this IMO.

  59. Clupula

@48 – I actually think the final game of Killzone 2 looked better than the pre-rendered trailer, for the most part.

As for Blu-Ray, we’ll never know, will we? Since developers went out of their way to make everything multiplatform, the only old school franchise we ever got to see exclusively on Blu-Ray was MGS4, which is still one of the better looking games of this gen. The gameplay itself in some ways is better than previous Metal Gear titles, but in other ways, takes a step back (I very much missed having to mend wounds, like you did in MGS3 and the lack of Codec calls compared to MGS3 was very disappointing). But it showed the potential for greater things. Not to mention there was quite a huge downgrade in graphics from MGS4 to MGR when they went multiplatform from the very beginning.

Thanks to the pure incompetence of Ken Kutaragi, who pretty much fucked up the PS3′s first couple years AND inadvertently made the 360 into a major player, we will not ever know if certain games would have been vastly better had they been PS3-exclusives. I do know that extra storage space certainly couldn’t have been a bad thing.

    #59 2 years ago
  60. Da Man

#56, platforming being less difficult than Angry Birds is a fact. Whether you like Sony or not. People disliking the game is an opinion.

No amount of Sony fanboys or inane walls of text would ever change that..

CoD is another example, the recycled iterations actually happen.

    #60 2 years ago
  61. Beta

It was always going to have similarities to Uncharted, the same engine, the same dev etc.

However the combat is a lot more violent and seemingly more tense and the addition of the infected offers a different challenge than Uncharted’s genero grunts.

There’s no regenerating health, there’s a crafting system, the atmosphere is different. It’s less based around cinematic set pieces and run and gun action.

    #61 2 years ago
  62. Joe Musashi

An entire genre is not easier/harder than a specific game.

That’s not even a logical comparison. Even as a generalisation it’s not factual. Opinions are opinions, not facts. However hard you stamp your feet and insult/mock/dismiss those that don’t fit in with your view, it doesn’t change the status of your opinion.

    And that’s a fact.

Getting back on topic, this game looks damn incredible! Naughty Dog are, pound for pound, THE most consistent developers out there. No one has to reinvent the wheel, but just make a damn good game, which they have always been doing. Another $60 well spent for me. :)

  65. monkeygourmet

    @59

Killzone & Motorstorm did look pretty good in the end. Sony did take bullshots and fake footage to a new level that day though.

It wasn’t so much they did it, it was more the crazy fans that ran with it and believed some of the more crazy claims.

having more space on the Bluray was nice, but in reality; they plumped for a slower speed drive just to get Bluray into your home over fixing some of the other problems with the console. Memory etc…

What we were generally left with was HD cutscenes & 7.1 surround sound coupled with long loading times and mandatory installs. The trade off wasn’t good IMO, i’d rather have had a cheaper console with DVD, but more memory and a slightly better GPU and waited a year or so and got a cheap Bluray player.

Thats just me though. People went batshit crazy over the Bluray drive though on launch, heralding it a new HD era for games… That was just misplaced hope and Sony manipulated people by making them think otherwise.

I suppose they had to dangle the ‘carrot’ what with the huge launch price.

This gen has been somewhat hampered by exclusives though, I def agree there. Final Fantasy 13 should have stayed on PS3 for sure, maybe it would have shown more promise if it had.

The 360 was no slouch though, Halo 4 showed what was possible if MS could be bothered throwing money at a project.

  67. Clupula

@65 – I just keep thinking of the fact that there has never been a two disc PS3 game, but the option HAS been there. Kojima specifically said that he cut things from MGS4 because, while Sony and Konami said it would have been okay to do so, he didn’t want to make it a two disc game (Part of me wonders if he kept it single disc just so he could have that one joke about the game being on one disc). And I can’t help but wonder if there had been more exclusives and Kojima had gone ahead and filled two discs up, that we wouldn’t be seeing a lot more impressive looking and playing games this gen.

But all that is just speculation since no one has done it.

    #67 2 years ago
  68. Da Man

    Mg Too true.

Not exactly rocket science to figure that if Blu-ray gave such possibilities PC games would use it, alas they don’t, they use superior gpus.

I love Uncharted. Some of my favourite games of this gen. I just don’t feel the desire to play a game that feels, looks and move so similarity to it that it might as well be it.

Simply from watching the footage, I get this odd sense of fatigue from the glaring, face punching similarities. There’s using the same engine, and then there’s this. It’s lazy.

It reminds me of what they used to do with the Tomb Raider franchise back in the day, which each release being a barely iterative change over previous one. They simply decided to create a different setting for this one and call it a new franchise.

    #69 2 years ago
  70. DrDamn

    @69
For me that’s not directly the issue. For me what made the Uncharted games was the gunplay and the environments they set that up in. At a higher level it’s a corridor shooter taken to the extreme, but the beauty in it was as the corridors opened out into an arena where the shoot-outs happened. The combination of design, verticality, variety in enemies. It was just great gameplay and every time I completed a section I weapons and areas I could have exploited to complete it in a different way.

Now the problem for The Last Of Us is that it has to replace the gunplay, because it’s clearly not that sort of game, with something just as good. So I don’t see the game as too similar to Uncharted, more that it’s replacing the crux of what Uncharted is to me, and that’s going to be tough. I hope they pull it off.

  71. Christopher Jack

Da Man, can you please simplify things a bit so you don’t have to come back & keep posting, perhaps next time you see a Last of Us article it’d be easier to come in & say “I’ve never played this but this game sucks, anyone who disagrees with me is a Sony fanbooy”. All in the post of course.

    #71 2 years ago
  72. Da Man

I can’t do that, because regardless of how Sony fanboys want to think that way, I’ve said a bit more.
