Torment: Tides of Numenera team welcomes Chris Avellone

inXile has confirmed that Chris Avellone will officially join the design team for Torment: Tides of Numenera, according to a press release issued by the firm.

The project has hits its $3.5 million stretch goal, thanks to other monies thrown at it through PayPal. The Kickstarter total is sitting at $3,452,819.

Chris Avellone was lead designer on Planescape: Torment, the inspiration behind Torment: Tides of Numenera. He is co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment, and the firm’s creative director.

He was also lead designer for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, and and last year he worked with inXile on its Wasteland 2 project.

Avellone’s “primary role” on Torment: Tides of Numenera will be to “review and provide feedback on all creative elements of the game, including the story, characters, and gameplay areas.”

In addition, he will write an eighth companion for the game deal for both Torment and the Ninth World.

Set in the world of Monte Cook’s Numenera, the project reached its target funding level on Kickstarter within the first six hours of the 30-day campaign when it launched on March 6.

inXile has outlined further stretch goals for up to $4.5 million, which will include a more complicated morality system, “a player stronghold, and new locations.”

The project’s initial release timeframe was recently delayed, so expect it to hit Linux, Mac and PC sometime in early to mid 2015.

Steph, I don’t how is it where you live, but I was specifically told that there is no monies, because money is already plural.

On topic I am still not sure how this whole Kickstarter craze will end, specifically with the big projects. But I have a bad feeling.

“monies” is a word used frequently on the internet now, and is a tounge in cheek joke.

I hope they get to 4 million. I’m fairly certain they’ll hit the 3.8-4 mark.

I wish the Avellone cult of personality would stop.

There are far better writers at Obsidian who never get a look in.

#4 Agreed, but some people are obsessed with the man.

It seems random words are coming out of your mouths. There isn’t any “cult”, but just suitable respect for the main writer of Planecape Torment which continues to be unsurpassed in its way (Obsidian or otherwise). And this is about a successor to that “legacy” and it’s just fitting that his participation is met with some gladness and reassurance. Even if it wasn’t for that, it’s just fine that there is another writer on the team. And at best there is one writer at Obsidian up to his level or somehwere similar, George Ziets.

What’s with Chris hate? The man has written some great game scripts and designed a few good titles so of course a lot of gamers will have respect for him.

    Well said.
