Unity headed to PS4, PS3, Vita, PS Mobile and future cloud services

Sony and Unity have signed a strategic agreement delivering the popular Unity engine to a variety of Sony platforms.

Gematsu reports Unity will hit the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Vita and PS Mobile platforms with “optimized deployment”.

Interestingly, the announcement makes note of future cloud services, too; Sony has made much of its integration of Gaikai tech into the PlayStation Network, potentially allowing for instant games streaming, so presumably this is what Unity is referring to.

As well as the ease of development the Unity engine offers would-be PlayStation developers, it also makes it simpler to port existing games developed using the near-ubiquitous tech.

Unity for PlayStation is expected to launch in northern autumn. Nintendo signed a similar deal with Unity, but offers a free engine license with all Wii U dev kits to help entice indies to the new console.

Good deal. PS3 and Vita have constantly been getting indie love, this will only help matters further.

alot many people have been waiting for this (including me), thank goodness this happend, not supporting vita was a really bitchy thing on unity’s part.

@Redwood,
Really? Escape Plan on vita showed Unity 3.1 as its engine. Maybe now the native thing is added, but vita games have been made using Unity.
Btw, do inform us if and when you launch a game on vita. Looking forward to it :)

@4 AFAIK vita was not supported by unity directly(up until unity4), meaning you can’t just build to it like you would say to IOS, which is fairly simple using unity. And about escape plan they did made the game in unity but ported it to ps vita themselves, or maybe(and most probably) the wrote a custom port for unity to be able to run/build games for vita using the playstation suite SDK.

this is potentially huge. They’re one step closer in opening up the platform. It’s huge for indies.

@Redwood,
Yeah, now direct porting would be easier. Good for devs and consumers both.
@6,
Completely agree.

My fucking god.

Something has to go wrong with Sony soon. They’re being really clever at the moment.

Like, out of character clever.

Next step… Open the platform up. I mean will that even happen?

Like self publish, no Playstation Certification?

Or streamline certification process? Ala iOS?
