Media Molecule co-founder named Australian Woman of the Year

Thursday, 14th March 2013 13:04 GMT By Dave Cook

Media Molecule co-founder and studio director Siobhan Reddy has been chosen as Australian Woman of the year at a ceremony that took place here in London last night.

It’s a big coup for the gender issues in gaming, given the increased debate surrounding issues of equality in the workplace, and fair play online. Reddy said that her win has caused her to think deeper on the issues at hand, “I feel it’s given me probably a bit of a rocket up the bum in some way.

“I’ve had my head down for so long just making things, that I’ve been bad in realising how low the numbers of women are within games. In the last months I’ve started to think more about how I can encourage young women to get into games.”

Earlier this year Reddy – originally from Syndey – was also named one of the 100 most powerful women in a list compiled by BBC Radio 4.

Last week we saw speakers at EA’s Full Spectrum event discussing issues of gender and orientation equality in gaming, in a bid to address the ‘white dude’ nature of gaming. Check out our report here.
