Epic’s Tim Sweeney is “looking forward” to the digital future

Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney has said he is “looking forward” to the digital future, where development budgets can be scaled and priced differently.

Speaking with Edge, Sweeney said the market at present is “inefficient” and digital distribution makes things more cost effective.

“Once you have a game, it’s available pervasively online, and your devices are all Internet-connected, do you really need to run television ads to get people to find it at the top of the App Store? I’m looking forward to our digital future,” he said.

Sweeney feels that once “more sales of games” are out of retail, it will create more “flexibility for developers to make games at different scales and price them differently.”

“If you look at games that just encompass triple-A production values, there’s a huge range of scales where games have been successful and profitable,” he told Edge. “You don’t need $100 million to build a triple-A game. But if you want to spend that much, you can build one that looks absolutely insane.”

    yes priced differently as in 5 dollars for an aaa game at day of release. because i ain’t paying 60 dollars for a digital rental…

    With Infinty Blade Dungeons he would have had millions of bucks in a week. He decided to put that on ice. Now thats what I call “inefficient”.

    I’d be happy to go all digital, can’t be arsed with disc boxes sitting around and having to change discs and stuff. Only problems I have with it are prices, and the fact my internet is pish.

    Games get buried fast on online services, at least on PSN. At a traditional store you might see a game from 2008 sitting next to games from 2011 and 2012.

    @5 I can’t speak for the console services, but on the digital services on the PC, you have a ton of old games that get dug up whenever it’s time for a sale. A lot have their prices slashed around 6 months after release, and often make it back on the frontpage.

    Psychonauts was part of the main line-up of the Steam 2011 holiday sale, and a Humble Bundle as late as May 2012. Somehow I have a hard time seeing Gamestop promoting a title in the front of the store six years after release.
