China’s games industry amassed $9.7 billion in 2012
China’s games industry grew 35.1% last year, with combined revenue of $9.7 billion. The country’s latest stats show that online gaming is the leading market-driver, accounting for 90% of the total figure.
Techweb reports that the 2012 China Games Industry Report disclosed China’s online gaming sector alone generated $9.1 billion in 2012, while mobile gaming is yet to explode, generating a meagre – by comparison – $520 million for the year. Given the legal complications regarding consoles in China, the hardware market only amounted to 0.1% of the overall total.
The report predicts total revenue of $21.7 billion by 2017 which suggests a year-on-year rise of 12.4% from now until then. Mobile is set to expand in a significant manner, aping its success on Western borders, thanks in large part to Apple and Android’s growing popularity in the region.
