Trion Worlds confirm layoffs today

The development team for Trion World, presumably working on Rift, has been reduced by up to a third with layoffs on Tuesday.

Gamasutra report that around 40 developers spanning several disciplines, including artists and designers have been let go and speculates they were part of the Rift team.

Trion Worlds have commented, “As a response to market conditions, product timelines and the natural evolution of our company, we have made some organizational changes, which include a workforce reduction. This was a difficult decision and we wish the best for those affected by these changes. At Trion, we remain focused on delivering top quality online game experiences, and are committed to supporting Rift and launching our highly anticipated new titles Defiance, Warface, and End of Nations in 2013.”

The news follows last week’s layoffs at Petroglyph, who worked on MMORTS End of Nations for Trion Worlds. With End of Nations approaching launch, the decision was made to bring the game development in house, reports GamesIndustry.

Rift players are being given a chance to play the Storm Legion expansion and Endless Eclipse update for free this weekend.
