City of Heroes players hold Unity Rally on game’s last evening live

City of Heroes, the first superhero MMO which launched in 2004, is no more, as NCSoft shut the game servers down last night at 11.59pm PST. Players held a final Unity Rally on all servers at City Hall as a last goodbye until the lights went out over Paragon City. NCSoft announced in August the MMO would be shuttered along with Paragon Studios due to a “realignment of company focus and publishing support.” Surely the game’s players gave CoH a send off worthy of a superhero last night. Thanks, TenTonHammer.

Bye City of Heroes/Villains. You were something special, now gone forever.

Heh. It wasn’t even a planned rally, just players coming back for the last day. Even the “small town” servers were packed, Virtue crashed no less than four times under the sheer load… biggest game ever to get shut down. I really hope Disney or some other company decides to rescue us. City of Heroes was a game far too good and far too lively to deserve being buried by backdoor politics.
