WoW design ‘never influenced by Activision’ – Blizzard defends Kotick

Wednesday, 12th September 2012 11:05 GMT By Dave Cook

World of Warcraft’s design or direction has never been influenced by publisher Activision, developer Blizzard has stated during a Reddit Q&A session.

During a Reddit ‘ask me anything’ session’, World of Warcraft game director Tom Chilton stressed the studio’s independence.

“I’ll come out and say it,” Chilton explained, “Activision gets an unfair reputation among our players for this, as does Bobby Kotick. We do demos for the Activision executive team about twice per year (sometimes only once). They ask intelligent questions about why we’re doing what we’re doing, but at no point have any mandates (or even “suggestions”) about the game’s design been issued.”

So there you go, no more Bobby-bashing in the back.

    Oh PLEASE.

Bobby Kotick, has, on record, stated “I want to exploit every franchise we have into the ground”.

Diablo 3 has a real money auction house, which blizzard takes 15% off per transaction.

While that is certainly not world of warcraft’s design, Activision obviously has some deeply rooted tendrils within Blizzard. They just may not affect what is perceived to be a “successful” game/design team (not that it helped infinity ward, but I put that down to the studio head’s ego rather than anything else).

Blizzard feed into the board of directors, of which Kotick is one. At the end of the day, if the board says jump, Blizzard will goddamn jump.

Please… it was more about the number of times you had to run through a raid than actually completing it… PUGs are common place now in WoW, right?

Independent, as long as they got rid of key staff who didn’t like the way Blizzard was heading towards Activision’s exploitative anti-gamers policies.

    Independent like colonies.

I’m more interested in who sets their targets – Activision or Blizzard.

Blizzard is just a mediocre marketing campaign studio now. They sold to soulless man who dares to make that much money.

@2, You really need to step up your game.

Have we got any other popular MMOs that the publisher had no influence on?

Great, so its Blizzard alone thats made all the awful shitty choices about their games!

I have no problem with this because Blizzard has been shitty for quite awhile.

    Haven’t people gotten this yet?

THEY HAVE NO power over Blizzard.

Vivendi owns both Activision and Blizzard, if anything Vivendi is the ones who have influenced blizz.

@1 — if i’ll implement an auction house with my game, i’ll make sure to get a proper cut too. Be real and think about it for a sec..

You spend thousands of dollars to buy servers, pipz who can manage it 24/7.. life ain’t fee you know.

And of course, EA knows this very well.
