Rumour: Microsoft making Kinect Play Fit, accessory Joule to accompany it

Tuesday, 8th May 2012 14:38 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Microsoft is making Kinect Play Fit, according to a Verge report. The effort will also come with an accessory, currently codenamed Joule.

Joule will be a heart-rate monitor similar to the one that comes bundled with EA Sports Active, allowing users to track that person’s heart-rate wirelessly so any exercise, regardless of what it is, fits the target goal.

Most Kinect games will be compatible with Kinect Play Fit, but don’t have to make use of the exercise tracking feature.

For its introduction, Kinect Play Fit will see a dashboard update in the near future. More details are due to drop at E3 in three weeks.

Yeah, its all nice and cool… But when the fuck are they going to think about to solve in the future the “walking/running directions” problem? Its silly to be doing sexual moves in order to go ahead in the game. xD

They don’t have to solve that.
Kinect is the “Dance Central” machine right now and they want it to be a fitness machine as well like Wii / Wii Fit.

@1 – perhaps something they should have solved before telling everyone ‘this is the future of gaming’.

@2 – I wish someone from MS would come forward and admit this! Cos they’re still beating the ‘Kinect is for hardcore too’ drum last I checked.

i dont think it would be difficult to make a tiny controller, that fits in the palm of your hand, to walk in games…

something the “hardcore” users would appreciate and the casual public would never know about

@3 if I remember correctly Kinect Star Wars was initially touted as a “hardcore” title for Kinect. I think how that turned out confirms the device (which is great for dancing/fitness and anything that actually does involve the body) isn’t a good fit outside of those.

@1 the solution exists – gamepads and similar alternatives such as the Wii’s Nunchuck. Kinect on its own is never going to be better than the alternatives and unless people really want to use it for the gimmick value it’s no good unless bolstered by some other input device.
