Dead or Alive 5′s women to be more “realistic”, “high class”

Wednesday, 15 February 2012 01:44 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi believes the Dead or Alive fanbase has grown past bouncing breasts and wants real female fighters.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Hayashi said it’s time to move on from the franchise’s seedy past.

“In the series up to now we focused on some kind of… Sports Illustrated [aesthetic]. Like a magazine for high school kids, with women portrayed in that sense,” he said.

“We’ve always had the sex factor in the game; in the past, the female characters had to have big breasts, they had to have scanty dress.”

Now, Team Ninja wants to feature real women – the kinds of women they know and like.

“We’re trying to focus on the real women that surround us; the voice of a female, the mannerisms. We are being realistic about it,” he said.

“We want to show something that’s more high class, that adult males of our generation could look at a woman [character] and be impressed with her as a woman, not just as a pin-up.”

Team Ninja seems to want to move past its reputation altogether, bringing a grown-up tone to Ninja Gaiden, previously known for its gratuitously violent gore.

“The old team was known for making games that just had two primary elements: Sex and violence. It was very obvious,” Hayashi said.

“The new team, we want to take it to a new level – to a direction that contains emotional experiences that can move players. Rather than just having violence for the sake of violence and cheap thrill, we wanted to give meaning to violence: Why does this happen? We want to link emotion to violence.

“We wanted to make a game that is for mature audiences, that can make adults think.”

Team Ninja has been quiet on the Dead or Alive 5 front in the build up to Ninja Gaiden 3′s release in March, releasing scant images and gameplay footage, so we’ll probably have to wait a few months to see how the fighter’s approach to female character design plays out ahead of its release this year.

Thanks, Siliconera.

Actually I think it’s a good change in direction and assuming their fan base has matured, the right change. Same can be said for Lara in the rebooted tomb raider.

I doubt boobs and blood would hold the interest of the average 30+ year old.

  3. YoungZer0

@2: Yeah it definitely is a good change in direction. I’m so fucking sick of Fanservice and sexism in videogames, it’s time to grow the fuck up. The result could actually be that more female players play it and less perverts.

I wouldn’t believe it, but judging by the latest Ninja Gaiden 3 videos, they really do seem to go through with this. This is one of the reasons why i’m bothered playing Ninja Gaiden 2: Zero Awesome Fucking Delta Omega Edition on PS3. The Female “CIA Agent” looks like she’s ready for some porn scenes.

I demand genderless, mediocre looking protagonists. Damn teenage pricks ruining videogames, I can’t control myself when playing DoA, I can’t even focus ffs.

In all honesty, they’re going to ruin this game by implementing some poorly written, poorly presented jap crap with second-rate gameplay. RIP Team Ninja, nothing close to the original Ninja Gaiden will likely come out of this studio again.

“If you disagree with me, you’re wrong.”

    #12 3 years ago
  13. Da Man

#12 No, you just totally missed my point.

It has nothing to do with disagreement. Disliking a game is one thing, deeming something as ideally tweaked, polished and balanced as the original NG poor because of the storyline or some optional character is silly.

Even if some day storylines will play just as much of a role in videogames, they will be revealed thru the gameplay.

There’re books, made of paper. And cinema too. Going thru the enemies just to advance the plot is a chore.

    #13 3 years ago
  14. silkvg247

@6 There’s a rather large difference between wobbly OTT “how can they even fight with those?!” boobies in your face, and “more realistic females”. It doesn’t mean lets take the sexiness away, it means let’s make it real. Am I on my own when I find the new “real” Lara infintely more attractive than the rather unrealistic original Lara? Truth be told I found the original Lara with her big boobs and size 4 waist a little grotesque.

When people grow up they (should) realise that it doesn’t have to be obvious to be sexy.

Also I have never played any of the NG games.. did I miss much? ;p

“Disliking a game is one thing, deeming something as ideally tweaked, polished and balanced as the original NG poor because of the storyline or some optional character is silly.”

…yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.

I don’t think this is silly at all. The boobilicious character-design, bland art-direction and stupid storyline is what always kept me away from the series. We should expect more from this fast progressing medium. It has to something to do with standards, if you play videogames for gameplay alone, have at it Hoss.

I want more and i don’t think it’s silly to dismiss a game if it doesn’t deliver a good story, a good art-direction or at least an acceptable representation of females.

Just played NG2 recently for the first time, i’m at the NY level now and … yeah, don’t think i’ll go further. It’s just fucking stupid man. Why do you judge games like these differently? Why not question how Ryu got so fast to NY, or why the CIA agent looks like a porn queen? Or that the first level is a complete rip-off from God of War 2?

    Why not?

And please, don’t give me that read books and watch films bullshit. There is more to videogames than just gameplay, even if old dinosaurs like you can’t seem to admit that.

    #15 3 years ago
  16. Da Man

    Why not?

A videogame by definition is meant to be played. It’s an opinion which ‘dictates’ that. You’ll just have much less trouble finding something appealing in books and cinema.

It isn’t fast progressing, it just happens to have numerous fads. And a total lack of perspective on part of people like you is astounding.

As I said, if you put plots above gameplay, then you picked a wrong hobby.

Oh, and NG2 is rubbish. Please refrain from changing the topic and inserting various red herrings in here. Then again, perhaps someone as interested in videogames as you won’t see a difference.

I’m only a few years older than you. I just, ironically, have higher standards. You play Enslaved and Heavy Rain, I read Asimov and Camus. So, if anyone should ‘not give that shit’ and ‘admit’ anything, it’s the opposite.

Just admit that you don’t know any better.

For a ‘dinosaur’ I have way too much understanding of proper placement of plots in videogames. Perhaps you should reread my post.

    #16 3 years ago
  17. Da Man

Oh, and to add to that. Just to clarify, if you would simply say that you have issues with oversexualized content, that would be a valid point. Some people have trouble with violent content too.

    #17 3 years ago
  18. YoungZer0

“You’ll just have much less trouble finding something appealing in books and cinema.”

I know, but that’s not what i’m looking for, i want videogames to evolve, because for me they can way more entertaining than movies or books.

“It isn’t fast progressing, it just happens to have numerous fads.”

Yeah, i mean if you look at how videogames have changed in the last 10 years, totally just fads.

“As I said, if you put plots above gameplay, then you picked a wrong hobby.”

As i said, just your opinion, man. I could live with Enslaveds lackluster gameplay.

“Oh, and NG2 is rubbish. Please refrain from changing the topic and inserting various red herrings in here. Then again, perhaps someone as interested in videogames as you won’t see a difference.”

If it’s so rubbish why didn’t you write “RIP Team Ninja” when they released NG2? And how am i changing the topic? We’re talking about Ninja Gaiden here, aren’t we?

“I’m only a few years older than you. I just, ironically, have higher standards.”

Don’t remember ever mentioning my age.

“You play Enslaved and Heavy Rain”

I love Enslaved and thought Heavy Rain was a complete disaster, what’s your point?

    “I read Asimov and Camus.”

Good for you. I read Nietzsche and Solzhenitsyn. What’s your point?

“Oh, and to add to that. Just to clarify, if you would simply say that you have issues with oversexualized content, that would be a valid point.”

Indeed i have. It’s just not that. If i play games like Resident Evil 5 and see special forces talking about the difficulties of being partners, i can’t help but feel sad.

Why are you so mad about it anyway? I find it hilarious that you seem to be so offended. It’s not like i’m going to take away your stupid games.

    #18 3 years ago
  19. Da Man

I’m not ‘mad’, post number 7 sees you making a silly statement, which is my whole point, don’t see why you still keep on missing it.

I don’t recall myself stating that videogames can’t be entertaining plot-wise, or that plots shoudn’t matter. It’s that an approach putting them above moving your avatar around is well, wrong. Have you seen the performance figures of Enslaved? If you want something from videogames that you can’t find in cinema or literature, then you didn’t look hard enough. As I said, you picked a wrong hobby.

Re fads: There were numerous Sierra point and click adventure games. There were the jrpgs which marked their death the moment they went for stories in place of role playing content. There were the Silent Hills, which exhausted themsleves after rehashing the same jap Steven King wannabe content for four games. Pretty much every videogame today had a superior analog ten years ago, so yeah if anything it’s devolving .

We were talking about a game called ‘Ninja Gaiden’.

Tell you what, ‘man’. You throw in some names. For someone reading Nietzsche you miss some way too critical points of his works. And for someone reading Solzhenitsin, you oddly enough put art or philosophy alongside entertainment. Quite frankly, that’s crazy if you still can’t see the difference at this point..

about the difficulties of being partners, i can’t help but feel sad.
There’s the piss poor narratives and intentionally ignored ones. Ninja Gaiden would be the latter.. Perhaps it isn’t these videogames which are ‘stupid’.

    #19 3 years ago

@19: “I’m not ‘mad’, post number 7 sees you making a silly statement, which is my whole point, don’t see why you still keep on missing it.”

Your “Point” as you still keep calling it, is, like i said, nothing more than your opinion. But you keep repeating your “point”, maybe one day it might become true.

You really don’t seem to be able to free yourself from the though that this might be just an opinion and nothing else.

“I don’t recall myself stating that videogames can’t be entertaining plot-wise, or that plots shoudn’t matter.”

And where did i say that?

“It’s that an approach putting them above moving your avatar around is well, wrong.”

Repeat after me: This is just my opinion and i should accept that people disagree with me.

“Have you seen the performance figures of Enslaved?”

Yes, they aren’t good … so how is this important?

“If you want something from videogames that you can’t find in cinema or literature, then you didn’t look hard enough.”

Show me an interactive film or book with fantastic art-direction and thoughtful characters. Go ahead.

“As I said, you picked a wrong hobby.”

Repeat after me: This is just my opinion and i should accept that people disagree with me.

“There were the jrpgs which marked their death the moment they went for stories in place of role playing content.”

When did that happen? Because when i ask someone about what they liked about Final Fantasy 7, they liked the story and cast the most, not many mention the gameplay.

“Pretty much every videogame today had a superior analog ten years ago, so yeah if anything it’s devolving.”

Repeat after me: This is just my opinion and i should accept that people disagree with me.

“You throw in some names. For someone reading Nietzsche you miss some way too critical points of his works. And for someone reading Solzhenitsin, you oddly enough put art or philosophy alongside entertainment.”

This actually say ALOT about you. Seems like you can’t read the work of someone you can’t agree with. Just because i read the both of them doesn’t mean i agree with everything they say.

Stop making a fool out of yourself.

“There’s the piss poor narratives and intentionally ignored ones.”

Ah now you’re getting it. See, that wasn’t that hard now, was it?

“Perhaps it isn’t these videogames which are ‘stupid’.”

Whoops, nope, nope you don’t get it.

    This is getting nowhere.

    #20 3 years ago
  21. Da Man

Okay, I’m going to clarify this as accessible as possible.

Yeah, opinion, because it doesn’t have scientific evidence.

The games are meant to be played, theoretically the result of your supposed ‘evolution’ would be computer toys with plotlines on the level of Dostoevsky, except that will never happen because people like him don’t exist anymore, if they existed he wouldn’t do it, and even if there’re quarter qualified writers they aren’t going to do computer entertainment any time soon. And the most you’re going to get out of them is some second – rate stuff.

Dostoevsky can’t be fun. It can’t be entertaining. You can’t play Solzhentsin’s Archipelag Gulag. It’s even insulting to do so. Not only that, but there’s zero purpose to do it. And since there’s absolutely nothing interactive computer toys are able to do which hasn’t been done in classical literature or cinema, it questions the whole purpose to begin with.

As I said, people like you lack the perspective. Videogames ‘ roots trace to dice and football, cinema’s roots trace to theatre.

On the other hand, if you want entertaining plots to accompany gameplay, then more power to you. But, and this is a big but.. you ‘re going to play through the stages, so if you aren’t after playthrugh to begin with, you would be better off with movies.

The jrpgs gradually but steadily disappeared and died out, if you look at all the series which were around in the 90s and now, it’s not hard to notice.

“Pretty much every videogame today had a superior analog ten years ago, so yeah if anything it’s devolving.”

Repeat after me: This is just my opinion and i should accept that people disagree with me.
Even if you disagree, which borderline noone who were around ten years ago would do, my statement was a reply to the previous point about new games. Every single one has a ten years old analog.

Whether you agree with ‘them’ or not, your posts hardly come across as someone’s who ‘s familiar with it, that’s what I meant. But you’re right, it ‘s nothing of my business so anyway.

Ah now you’re getting it. See, that wasn’t that hard now, was it?
Really? In which case criticizing Ninja Gaiden for lackluster narrative would be like doing so with Modern Talking for not being Jimmy Hendrix.

Anyway, tell you what. I think we can agree that you dislike games with sexual content.. unless it has you being in the dominant role like GoW. So it would seem. I can live with that ;).

The amount of words typed seems to triple when people become fucked off at eachother here

    #22 3 years ago
  23. DSB

Sexual trends have always been dictated by supply. If everybody looks like pornstars, people want the girl next door, and vice versa. Which is why I always keep one of each.

I can’t take the puritanism seriously. If people want to make outrageous sexual statements, why on earth shouldn’t they do that?

It can be dumb, smart, cheap or refined, but I don’t believe the norms should be dictated by whatever the most sensitive people are offended by.

If people find it tasteless, they can go play Beyond Good and Evil or Mirror’s Edge or The Longest Journey. There’s something for everyone.
