The rumours have been confirmed: EA has officially announced its acquisition of social RPG developer, KlickNation. The developer has been renamed BioWare Sacramento and will join BioWare’s existing social gaming team to form BioWare Social. The team will focus on development of RPGs for social networks and be headed up by former KlickNation CEO Mark Otero.

EA’s acquisition of KlickNation was welcomed by senior VP of BioWare, Dr Ray Mazyka.

“KlickNation’s expertise in building innovative and compelling RPGs for social platforms makes them a seamless tuck-in with the BioWare team at EA,” he said. “We share the same creative values. The new BioWare Social unit will bring BioWare and EA franchises to the growing audience of core gamers who are looking for high quality, rich gameplay experiences on social platforms.”

As KlickNation, the developer created Facebook games Superhero City, Age of Champions, Starship Command and Six Gun Galaxy. EA already owns a number of casual and social studios, including BioWare San Francisco (formerly EA2D), PopCap, Bight Games and Playfish. No details of the deal were disclosed.

Former KlickNation CEO Mark Otero said of the deal, “Joining with BioWare and EA is an opportunity to realize our vision for bringing high-quality RPG titles to the fast-growing, highly-engaged core gamers looking for deeper experiences on social platforms.”

EA has four years remaining on its “strategic relationship” with Facebook.
