Guillemot: “Transition” to PS4 and next Xbox “coming soon”

Tuesday, 19th July 2011 10:48 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has said that the move from PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to PlayStation 4 and the next-gen Xbox is happening a lot sooner than expected.

In an interview with Gama, Guillemot said that the unveil of Wii U at E3 has seen Sony and Microsoft getting ready quicker than expected.

“I think it’s sending the message that the new transition is going to happen – and we’re going to have new machines coming soon,” he said.

Ubisoft will continue to be a publisher that will be there for hardware launches like Wii U – having been a launch partner for all of the current-gen systems such as 360, PS3 and Wii – according to Gulliemot.

“We’re going to continue to take this approach,” he said. “We feel this console is coming with very innovative features that will change the video game industry and we want to be a part of that.”

I think 2014 is just sweet spot we have solid year with 2012 and who knows what with 2013 where new consoles should be revealed and then in 2014 they would release

I really dont know what difference it will make. It will just be the same uninspiring games and genres with a graphical make over.

The industry cant even appear to afford making games for the current generation, how on earth it will survive on the next is beyond me. Bring back creativity!!!!

PC is where it’s at ;) (excluding MMOs)

I’d rather they waited a few more years, but ok.

Hasn’t he been saying it’s “coming soon” for ages now? I don’t think the Wii U is going to push anyone to move their plans up.

Hope for a mid-late 2013 release for both after a 2012 E3 reveal. I’ll likely side with Sony assuming they have the powerhouse. I also prefer their first party games & their dedication to us core gamers + I won’t have to fork out for XBL.

Hope Sony drastically improves the ergonomics for the PS4 controller, 5″ multitouch, high res screen on it would be nice too-Probably essential if it’s going to have access to the PlayStation Suite & hopefully the Android market too (which I highly doubt, it’ll only attract those interested in gimmicks & I don’t think manufacturers profit from 3rd party Android apps).

Powerhouse… yeah… making stupid and complicated hardware in which no one gives a Fuck about with 256 mb ram for only 599 US dollards.

Lets see what Sony is going to do next generation… bwahaha.

@8, Don’t be so foolish to assume the worst, you were the biggest critic of the PSV before it was unveiled & have seemingly switched sides-if you take anything at all from that, it’s clear that Sony’s engineers are working in tune with developers this time around.

Since the release of the PS3 devkit, Sony has hugely improved on it to make it more user friendly, still not as great as Microsoft’s but what would you expect from one of the largest software developers?

All I’d think that Sony needs to do to sell the PS4, is: Triple it’s CPU power, give us a comparable to a top end GPU, give us at the very least a couple of gigs of RAM(at least 4GB if it’s heavy on multitasking), provide a more user friendly devkit, redesign the controller & encourage day one AAA digital releases alongside the retail versions. Also, services should be a huge factor alongside hardware features, maybe affordable options like a cheap TV tuner(unlike the PlayTV).

    @4 – bingo padre!

It’s hardly as if any particular genre is in desperate need of more console power to fulfil it’s eternal promise of amazingness!
If Sony and MS rush into the next gen we’re only going to see MORE iterations of existing IP’s, LESS risk-taking, HIGHER production values, and a LOT more Team Bondi-esque dramas.

Guillemot’s talking shit and clearly has a boner for the WiiU. If Sony and MS hurry their plans because of WiiU, I will be very disappoint. The idea is just stupid.

    Yehh this guys nuts.

Wiiu isnt going to speed up M$ and Sony with their next consoles.

The only way it could have effected them is if it was more powerfull than PS3 and 360 and marketed as a Meda centre like the ps3 rather than a purely gaming console.
Everyones got their wii’s gathering dust under the tv allready and all ninty is giving them is a new controller for it.

Hell i dont really count WiiU as 8th gen tbh.
There was an article a few weeks ago saying that soon mobile phones will have as much power as PS360, So the WiiU is going to be a glorified phone that u cant take anywhere with you?

As for the article headline. Its still a bit too early for PS4 and the next xbox.
Because of the way hardware is getting better faster nowadays the next generation of hardware is going to have a REAL hard job of at lasting ten years, so they will need to put the best hardware available into these systems while still trying to balance out the price?

Its not going to be an easy thing for either of them to do.

Really, the opposite. The unveil of the WiiU will provide Sony/MS another year of developement. They aint gettin frenzied from that underpowered controllerconsole.

Back when everyone was swearing blood oaths about new consoles maybe coming toooo soooon in 2008, I was of the opinion that the current gen had better not come before Christmas 2012 or I would do something really mean, probably.

Since that still seems to be the case – 2013 at the earliest – I’m fine with it. (And no, Nintendo getting on side with 7 year old competitors doesn’t count as “the next gen”).

I disagree with those above. Consoles could stand a hardware upgrade; everything is starting to look samey. It’s been years since I’ve even noticed the graphics on any console title, not counting artsy flourishes from indie games. PC games, after being restrained for a long while by developers seeking multiplat dollars, are finally starting to make AAA console titles look ancient again (as was formerly traditional), which means it’s time for an upgrade.

@15 “There was an article a few weeks ago saying that soon mobile phones will have as much power as PS360, So the WiiU is going to be a glorified phone that u cant take anywhere with you?”

yeah, but those smartphones will be ten times! more expensive than WiiU & you can’t even connect them to a tv!putting a side the controllers and the games!
i’m sick of how some websites & analysts claim the smartphones will take on consoles.
i understand their wish cause its their very own product they like to take all over the market!

    #19 3 years ago
  20. Gama_888

    @19
Not in 2 or 3 years time they wont. High powered phones will become affordable for all as hardware standards get higher.
And there are all ready phones with HDMI output isnt there?

Add vita into the equation which can take care of the controller and games side you mentioned.

After that it just doesn’t seem like there is enough room in this state of hardware for the WiiU imo.

Wii U will be suprassed by any other next-gen console coming around 2014 or 2015. The later, the better. Wii U will be the Wii of next-generation again.
