Microsoft registers odd Sony-related domains
Here’s a strange little blip which may mean nothing at all. Superannuation has turned up a pair of domain registrations, Sony-Microsoft.com and Microsoft-Sony.com, both made by Microsoft itself.
It may be just a guard against squatters and impersonators, but feel free to speculate on a collaboration between the two giants, perhaps outside the games side of things, where the rivalry between the two pales in comparison to their joint battle against Apple.

@1, Sony’s too huge, much larger than Microsoft, obviously they don’t pump out the same kind of profits since MS is more software based.

Since MS lacks a handheld, perhaps it has agreed to release some of it’s own titles on Vita. A rather remote possibility but it could help the firm boost revenue and get more exposure for it’s games and Xbox in Japan.

@4 Your theory on possible Vita titles from them does seem pretty plausable, seeing as how game developers are known to use different distribution chains in different regions of the world (ex. Bathesda using Ubisoft in Europe to distribute its games, at least for Elder Scrolls IV that is), and they did say they wanted to get more exposure in Japan back at TGS, maybe this could be a way to do it. But I don’t see it as too likely. Mainly because of the huge rivalry the 2 companies have against each other (though full disclosure, I’m writing this from the perspective of a gamer in North America, so I really can’t speak to how their attitiudes might be towards each other in Europe or any other region of the world). If I had to guess, this is probably something more likely [as the article said] outside the gaming side of things. Because seeing a recent piece done on G4′s Attack of the Show, they went to the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington, and couldn’t help but notice that the computers they were using there to develop certain tech were Sony VAIO laptops (though I really can’t speak for the desktops).

Vaio laptops most likely, Sony is one of Microsofts biggest partners in PC space as Sony is one of the few PC makers who do anything original with PC’s designs, taking on Apple Macbook’s.

No chance they’ll do Vita games. Unless there’s an outside chance that it’s something phone or tablet-related, I’m betting it’s just a ‘cover your arse’ move to prevent other people having these.

i cant wait for a video of hiphopgamer telling to his verry verry low i.q fans who watch his shitty show that the ps4 will be in fact, a merger with sony and ms to do a unique console.
Only because of these domains. The guy himself is enough idiot to do it…

Prodbably outside gaming – PC for example.
On the other hand, if Sony agreed with MS to let them handle the OS for their consoles and use DirectX I still suspect MS would drop producing their own consoles in a second and support Sony console pushing MS software.
Hardware margins are very low next to software and I still believe MS would rather not have to produce their own hardware simply to give their software a platform.

It’s related to Sony VAIO’s and tablets.
Sony is the only one that trying to innovate PC laptops in some way.

Maybe Sony & Microsoft are partnering together to bring out the first wave of Windows 8 tablets & PCs.
@9, You’re not wrong, the real money comes from the software which is why Microsoft, Google & Apple are dominating in profits compared to guys like Sony, LG & Samsung.

@11, and pigs fly too.
Sony’s VAIO are not the most popular laptops. Maybe tablets, but their latest tablets are not impressive at all, just a bit of a different direction.

@12, That could change in the future, things tend to shift over time, especially with new generations. I’d personnally pick up a Samsung or Asus over a VAIO simply because they have the right specs for their price with a decent design & good build quality, Sony seems too interested in having a great external design before all else-sorry Sony, I’d rather get the best specs for my money over the best looks.

Everyone buying everyone.
@3: Microsoft could buy Sony with the cash they have on hand at the moment. They wouldn’t even need a share swap.
As for Sony being bigger, the market cap on Microsoft is ~9 times higher than the market cap on Sony (Market cap being roughly what it would cost to buy all of each company’s issued shares outright at the current share price).
