ESRB lists Chrono Trigger for PSP and PS3, rates FFVI
The ESRB has rated Chrono Trigger for PSP and PS3. That’s about it, really. We’ll mail Square Enix and see if we can find out more. Until then, look for it to appear as a PSone Classic on PSN – finally. Looking over the list, we also noticed Final Fantasy VI has been rated as well. That’s also damn good news. Thanks, Kotaku.

The PSX port was awful, the loading times were ridiculous and the cutscenes were pointless and out of place.

Couldn’t agree more. But still I enjoyed the hell out of it. I wish they would do an update for it. I would even settle for a handheald update like the previous FF titles.

They don’t do trophies for PSOne classics so unlikely you will see it happen.

@1 if those cutscenes you’re talking about are the same as the ds version then you are wrong.

well, I wasn’t talking theoretically ‘if’, and I haven’t played the DS version.
they were out of place, sometimes having nothing to do with what’s happening in the game, or shown at the wrong time. so no it’s not me who is.

You don’t say.
Let me rephrase that then, I disagree with your opinion on the added cutscenes, I think they’re great and not out of place at all.
Anyway I think we can all agree that the game itself is brilliant, yeah?

Well, to clarify the cutscenes weren’t bad, they were just lazily put into the game. they weren’t synced with what ‘s happening.
off the top of my head, say the one when you go to factory and meet Robo, if anything it would make sense if shown much later on.

All of the cutscenes do that. Like when Chrono is cutting the mountain in half it goes to the cut scene does it and then it does it with the game. It does that throughout the entire game its redundant. Is it that hard to delete the engine one?

Oh is that what you mean. Well I don’t mind that at all. In fact I think it’s kind of cool first seeing the movie then how it used to be, like when you first meet Ayla for instance, that one I do remember…

It didn’t ruin it for me at all I liked it but what I truly wish is that Square would remake it like they have done so for most of their FF on the DS. If they would do that for the 3ds that would definitely entice me to buy one.

Square have said countless times that they would support a more thorough remake / sequel for the franchise if the smaller remakes (the DS one), or re-releases sold well enough to warrant it.
They haven’t.

They like to pull a lot of excuses out of their ass, yet they continue to make a remake of FF. Hell they are even remaking ones that were never released outside Japan. SO anything is possible.

@15 No offense, but the Final Fantasy franchise (I assume you’re talking about FFIII here. If not, feel free to elaborate) has a slightly stronger track record in the sales department than the Chrono series does.
The DS title didn’t sell. At all. It’s as simple as that. They are not going to remake something that doesn’t even have an audience.
I’m a *huge* fan of Chrono Trigger. I’m just being honest about the situation.

“The DS title didn’t sell. At all. It’s as simple as that. They are not going to remake something that doesn’t even have an audience.”
Well thats because it was just a direct port with an added ending there was nothing done to it why would anyone pick that up when they have the PS version. I know thats why I didn’t pick it up.
I am not talking Chrono break just Chrono trigger. Really they are going to waste resources on remaking FFIII and FFIV and now FFVI which is a version that was never released outside Japan, why not do so with Chrono trigger? Square can’t assume that it wouldn’t sell because the previous one didn’t, it was the SNESversion with little to no added features. What were they expecting? Most if not all Square fans have that version already.

I’d definitely buy a remake but I don’t really want one, I think CT’s graphics are great and they hold up well… But maybe it’s different for people who weren’t around yet during the 16 bit era, I dunno.
In any case, replacing those graphics with DS level 3D seems doesn’t seem like a very good plan to me… Or even cutting edge 3D, I don’t care, a lot of its charm would be lost imo.
As for not selling enough, the game (ds version) wasn’t exactly available in huge quantities and for a very long time in stores was it? At least not where I live… Maybe if they’d flood the shelves like some other games do, they’d sell more too.

I play CT atleast once to twice every 2 month. I was around for 16 bit era but if they want to justify me paying 40$ for it on a handheld it better have updated graphics. Look at FFIV that was updated and it still keeps all of its goodness.

“Well thats because it was just a direct port with an added ending there was nothing done to it why would anyone pick that up when they have the PS version. I know thats why I didn’t pick it up.”
It doesn’t matter how you feel about it. This is how companies gauge this sort of thing. If they see that people have enough interest in a retro title, they green light future project.
The PSone version is over a decade and a half old. That’s not a valid way for them to judge the demand for something *now*.
“Really they are going to waste resources on remaking FFIII and FFIV”
FFIII was a test to see if people would buy these 3D remakes on the DS. Which they did. Millions of. FFIV was because it’s one of the most popular games in the franchise, and its remakes *constantly* sell well.
“and now FFVI which is a version that was never released outside Japan”
What the hell are you talking about? FFVI was released over in the US back in the 90s (as FFIII), later on the PSone (in all regions) under its proper numerical title, and even later still on the GameBoy Advance as Final Fantasy VI Advance, which had additional content.
This is only a PSone Classic re-release on the PlayStation store anyway. It’s not a remake or anything. It’s not like they’re spending money to make a new title or something.
“why not do so with Chrono trigger?”
Because it doesn’t sell. What part of that do you not understand?
Oh wait, that’s right, you’re the guy who didn’t by the DS title to help support consumer interest.

I fudged up I meant FFV.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108993-Square-Pumping-Up-Final-Fantasy-V-for-PSN-Release
“Square Enix’s Final Fantasy V never made it out of Japan on its original platform (the Super Nintendo). In the West, Square released Final Fantasy IV as Final Fantasy II (because it didn’t localize the NES’s actual Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III), and then skipped Final Fantasy V to release Final Fantasy VI as Final Fantasy III. It was a whole thing. Thankfully, Square Enix is now putting together a brand new release of Final Fantasy V for the PlayStation Network, and even throwing in some new content.”
“Oh wait, that’s right, you’re the guy who didn’t by the DS title to help support consumer interest.”
Why would I? I have the PSX version its on my bookshelf where the rest of my games are. I am not going to pay 30$ for the same game I already own.

Then dont complain that you’re not getting a proper remake if you haven’t put a penny down on the franchise in over 15 years. Chrono Trigger’s rereleases have always sold poorly. I don’t even know if the original game sold all that well either, to be honest.
And FFV was released for the PSone and GBA in all regions, just for the record…

I am not going to pay for a port, I am simply not going to. Square could have sweetened the deal with putting on the DS with new features slightly updated graphics but they chose not to. Is that their fans fault for not being rabid or for Square simply not being innovative like they have since PS2 days?
IGN says it best:
“If Square-Enix wants more sales, how about they stop overcharging fans for 14-year old ports?”
http://ds.ign.com/articles/992/992365p1.html
Square has this whole mind frame that they will just sell their games based on 90′s business model. FFXIII was the biggest disappoint then they have FFXIV which was a huge disappointment for their fans so much so they are rebuilding it. Anyways its pointless Square doesn’t have any business sense whatsoever.

Um you could actually consider DS CT slightly graphically updated, what with the menus being down on bottom screen during battles so the top screen is nice and uncluttered… Well it works for me.
And also people keep badmouthing FF XIII for some reason, I love that game…

I enjoyed the story hated everything else. It was waaaaaaay too linear even for a FF game.

There you go, I thought 12 was rather meh, and I didn’t mind the linearity, in fact I enjoyed it. What game isn’t linear after all? You go from point a to b to trigger the next story sequence, no matter how complicated they make the path from a to b, it’s still the same thing… Don’t quite know how to explain it, I found it refreshing not to have to go trough complicated dungeons just to get my next cutscene fix for a change…

I can deal with linear for only so much but 90% of the game was just a straight line more or less, then the talent system which was linear (the sphere grid gave more options), and you couldn’t even control all of your party members. If its doing a TB system like previous FF I want to control what they do not assume they will make the right decision.

I liked the characters (yeah, I know, but I really did) and I thought the story was a really good idea, just badly told… and missing chunks. But it gave me enough to see it through I guess. But outside of the characters (which look amazing and have lots of nice little details) and the CG stuff, the graphics were bland and often ugly. Pulse was a featureless expanse with ugly corridors off it and cocoon was just a walkway mostly. Plus the game is padded to fuck. I also didn’t like the battle system or being stuck on the 2 character battle system for the first half of the game, as the 2 character battles are atrocious.
Yet I still want FF13-2.
With 12 I liked the battle system and the gambit system. It felt like Dragon Age Origins… but you know, a few years before dragon age
I also liked how all the characters were blank slates and with stats only affected by equipment or the board thing where you choose stuff. Which was great because you are free to train anyone you want with any weapon you want.

Its funny I enjoyed the characters, environment (not the the ones we get to explore but the background) and story of FFXIII but when it came to FFXII I liked the battle system, the blank slate of talents but I found the environment to be bland and the story to be too shallow. If there was a way to marry FFXIII story, environment with FFXII game play. I think that would be the perfect or pretty close FF. Thats kinda why I am waiting for Versus. Not sure about FFXIII-2 hopefully square learned something about the last installment.
