THQ confirms staff redundancies at Kaos, Volition

THQ has confirmed it has laid-off 30 employees across Kaos Studios and Volition Studios.

Per a statement given to Gamasutra: “We have had to let go of 16 employees at Volition, our studio in Champaign, Illinois. We must adjust our workforce to fit the studio’s current needs, which is a relatively common occurrence in the game development industry,” said a representative.

“Steps are being taken to ensure team members affected by the transition are treated with appropriate concern. The changes are not expected to affect any current or future titles in development with Volition.”

As far as lay-offs at Kaos were concerned, 17 employees were let go, but the firm maintains a “dedicated team in place that will continue to support Homefront with an ongoing, robust DLC and content plan, as well as working on pre-production for future games.”

“We have made changes to ensure that the team size aligns to the current stages of internal product development,” the statement added.

Outplacement assistance is being offered to those affected by the redundancies.

    I think the real kicker there is Volition. Obviously Kaos Studios haven’t been able to deliver, even if they did work to the bone.

    Relic haven’t performed for ages now, so I’d say that makes Volition the best thing about THQ.

    Clueless gamers have no idea what they’re talking about.

    This kind of procedure is common. Different people are hired for different jobs during each development cycle. Some people are almost always let go when a game finishes development, because they were hired for specific duties. They knew this when they went into the job.

    This is not some big evil corporate decision. Take off your tinfoil hats. Also, look at the damn credits. This is a penny in the ocean of the game’s full development crew.

    @8, Yes, these guys are temporary contractors.

    @5, What do you mean Relic haven’t been able to perform for ages, in recent years they have primarily focused on 2 great games (Dawn of War & Company of Heroes) but now they’re primarily focused on Space Marine-which we need more details of! Like SP allies & enemies, whether or not there’s co-op, mp modes & mp characters, weapons, accessories, customization & blah blah blah.
