New Xbox hardware in 2015? “It’s not real,” says designer

Monday, 21 March 2011 12:56 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Following ZDNet unearthing an online portfolio that made mention of new Xbox hardware coming in 2015, the author of the page has reportedly confirmed it’s a fake.

The portfolio appeared to be team member of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business Design Group. Not so.

Ben Peterson, the designer in question, said to Eurogamer: “I’m a student designer, it’s not real.”

Peterson’s site says he is collaborating with MS to investigate “future user experiences and hardware for 2015″ for the IEB design group, with work beginning as early as this month.

The page also showed what could be a work sample of Peterson’s work. There’s a capture of it below.

The story’s travelled far and wide today, with next-gen hardware creeping steadily up the agenda as tomorrow’s hottest topics: only last month, it was discovered that Microsoft was hiring positions for yet-to-be-released consoles.

Well that goes on the ten Year basis they were talking about, so iam not that surprise to tell you the truth, i think the wii 2 will be coming between 2013 -2015, so it will be on that window, maybe a year earlier, as for the PS4 i think it will be coming for the 2016, so they close the ten year cicle.

Consoles get planned out years before their release, so 2015 doesn’t surprise me at all.

And I’m perfectly okay with that release date. The consoles we have right now do the job just fine.

    #10 4 years ago
  11. Hunam

I just hope that they work on some hybrid CPU/GPU chips and make the unit about the size of the current xbox slim out the gate.

That was the best thing about the Wii, that it was small from the get go, unlike the colossi PS3. Even the PS3 slim is massive.

    #14 4 years ago
  15. NiceFellow

Feels right. Whether people want to admit it or not the market broadly isn’t ready for another big jump. Most devs still think development costs to much just for PS3/360. Most games still struggle to succeed.

HW too early would simply see a small handful of big titles and leave the market split.

The Wii showed top range HW wasn’t everything, it has to be balanced to the big picture. From sales so far PS3 and 360 are just peaking, 360 probably this year and PS3 probably end of this year early 2012.

That still leaves plenty of tail to ride through to 2014/2015 and new HW while allowing time for the market and developers to catch up.

    #15 4 years ago

Actually, if they want to release in 2015, they’ll need to give it top spec 2013 components, as a minimum, so I don’t know why they’d be designing hardware so soon…

    20 – 15? O M G

So 5 year of graphical suckage? Oh geez… Just how is this even possible? Look at Crysis 2 Ps3/360 version of it.
All games by that time will be very slow on 360 or PS3. All games for PC will be dumbed down.

Thats not good, i hope Nintendo will release in the mean time something better. Because this is a bit ridiculous.

I’m not sure if Sony won’t plan something earlier because 2015 is just ugh…

    Well, great… Awesome or Perfect.

I mean, thats just too far. The only good thing about it is that we can have some really good games, except that MS are going for Kinect, Sony is going for NGP and a little bit of Playstation Move.

I suspect you’d find that there’s a very, very small percentage of gamers who are ‘unhappy’ with the technical prowess of the current generation of hi-def machines, Erth.

Most of the people who are unhappy seem to be people who don’t actually own consoles in the first place.

    #23 4 years ago
  24. Hunam

Erm. I’m a pc gamer dude. And aside from Crysis, almost all dedicated PC games these days are scaled back so they can play on most people’s PC’s. Look at Dragon Age Origins and Starcraft 2, hell even Stalker and Civ are made to run on lower end machines instead of the cutting edge hardware. The only games that really push the PC are games from the consoles these days.

    #24 4 years ago
  25. Erthazus

Console version of it looks worse then the Pc version (the lowest setting possible) + Temporary AA and sup bar 720p.

thats just make Xbox 360 and PS3 a SD console of this generation easily.

@Hunam, Bullshit. Have you ever played TOTAL War games or new game like SHOGUN that push the PC forward?

@Blerk, i have consoles. But i like the best experience. I’m fed up with experiences like Red Dead Redemption where it runs lower then 30 frames per second.
Thank god i’m buying exclusive console games, but if i started to buy multiplatform games like Crysis 2 i could go apeshit with it’s performance on my PS3.

Also, i’m going to buy Xbox 360 this year just for Gears Of war 3 and maybe Crytek’s Codename Kingdoms.

Just think how the new consoles would need to be so that they are considered better than the NOW console :P It’s crazy because graphics at the moment is pretty awesome so I doubt it’ll be much of a graphics leap unless in the few years it really speeds up on PC.

The current consoles pretty much have everything we need so how will they justify us paying for another console when the games will most likely play on the NOW consoles XD Crazy thinking it makes my head hurt :P

People are down playing graphics but I think the graphical leap will be there and better than this generation by 10 times. As long as CG movies look much better over actually gameplay there will always be that bar to reach that quality every gen. Who would have thought back in the SNES and PS1 era we’d see games as good as Uncharted or KZ3 running in real time.

I expect fighters like Tekken to finally break that uncanny valley next gen and actually look super realistic. On a technical side I also wouldn’t mind a next gen GTA that looked slightly better than this gen but we get so much more in terms of physics and larger playing areas like GTA world where you can travel back and forth to other countries. Next gen GPUs and CPUs should have no problem rendering all that with ease but in terms of graphics I think next gen will still blow us away and have the same graphical leap in comparison from a PS2 to a PS3.

  37. Ireland Michael

    “No one cares Erthazus.”

    ^ This.

Graphics are great for providing atmosphere and lending a game a sense of identity, but all that’s requires to achieve that is creativity, and the current graphical plateau set by the 360 and the PS3 (the PS3 moreso, but that’s not really the point) is more than satisfactory for 90% of people.

And frankly, the last thing the industry needs right now is more expensive games. The thing you graphic whores seem to forget is that the higher the glass ceiling of visual quality gets, the more expensive these games get.

It’s simply not necessary, and nobody but PC fanboys care.

” is more than satisfactory for 90% of people.”

Statistics please. All i see is a small opinion in which console fanboys will obviously agree.
What you said is not true at all.

Graphics are not everything but system capabilities is also important in which 360 and PS3 are already dated. Games like SHOGUN 2 are impossible on them just because of the system. There is also a reason why people develop new technology for new consoles.
If you don’t need new, fine. Stay with your Ps3 and 360 but a lot of people care about new ones.

@Fin, you need a doctor. Go see one. I can’t comment on your opinion when it is full of “shut the fuck up, fuck, fucking” and etc. Grow up.

    #40 4 years ago
  41. Ireland Michael

Dude, it wasn’t a literal statistic. The point I’m making is, most people don’t care. If they did, the Wii or the DS never would have sold as well as they did.

I know exactly what you’re going to say “Oh, but they’re soccer moms and kids! They don’t count!” Tough shit junior, they do count, and the companies are going to market their machines to whoever will buy them.

“in which 360 and PS3 are already dated.”

Only to you. To most of us, they’re just fine. We don’t care if a game has 16x anisotropic filtering and 8x anti-aliasing and whatever other fandangled graphics feature you want to name.

We just want to sit down and enjoy our games.

Christ, Okami runs on PS2 specs, and it still looks beautiful upscaled on a PS3. I can think of only a handful of games on modern specs that have that much visual creativity. All you care about is “realism”.

“Games like SHOGUN 2 are impossible on them just because of the system.”

Games like Shogun 2 are impossible because strategy games don’t work with a controller. If you want to those kind of experiences, just be happy with your PC. I am. I don’t need my games consoles to be a PC.

When I think of next generation consoles, the last thing I think about is graphics.

I think of permanent storage solutions built in consoles front the start (worst design choice of the 360, not having a HDD built in), allowing all games to take advantage of the unique uses a HDD – persistent features in world, faster loading, etc. I think of seamless interfaces. I think of better AI, more elaborate game design and even greater freedom for indie developers.

    I don’t think about graphics.

  42. xxJPRACERxx

The thing I hate most with current consoles is they’re all sub-hd @ 30 fps. Sure there’s some 720/1080p games but the majority are not. I’m use to play PC games at full 1080p with 4x AA and 16x AF @ 60 fps. The difference is enormous.

I also hope these new consoles will have at lest 4 gig ram, since this is a big limitation with current consoles.

Edit: I’ve just read Erthazus comments and we agree on this. Thing is, console and PC gamers are really different.

“The thing you graphic whores seem to forget is that the higher the glass ceiling of visual quality gets, the more expensive these games get”.

Well you could always make extra cash by going professional with your second hobby. I hear there’s a lot of demand for gay irish porn these days.

You people must have forgot how much we paid for SNES and GENESIS titles back in the day. Some games ran for $70-$80…..turtles in time anyone? :D

Now lets get real here people without massively enhanced graphics you might as well call the nextbox and PS4, gamecube/wii wannabes. If you don’t properly upgrade the graphics card to new higher standards than I’m sorry you’re just not next gen. If SONY had it planned that way then they would have some way where you could just add more ram to the PS3 until tech got cheaper to produce the PS4 with remarkable graphics. 2015 is a long time away and technology moves fast so don’t be surprised to hear about some new ground breaking way to make everything we wished for possible….even at affordable prices.

There’s a significant difference between ascii pictures and mono-color vector graphics.

There’s a significant difference between mono-colour and 16-colour EGA graphics.

    There’s a significant difference between 256×240 EGA and 512×448 16-bit graphics.

There’s a significant difference between 2D, parallax scrolling, pixel based, 16-bit graphics and 7.1 audio, 60Hz, HD, 3D graphics.

There is NOT a significant difference between current-gen consoles and the best that PC gaming has to offer.

I haven’t seen graphically jaw dropping visuals on any single platform since E3 2005.

    …and that was fake.

A lot of things that came out of ‘That Conference’ in 2005 were fake :/

You still haven’t played Uncharted 2 huh ;) or GOW3 ;) and those KZ and Motorstorm target renders will be real on PS4 I have no doubt about that. As a matter of fact that 2005 KZ tech demo is what you’ll see next gen in real time on launch day.

    Hi TEA.

I actually got uncharted 2 for Christmas in 2009 and finished it a week or so later. I can honestly say that it is hands down one of the most visually arresting games I have ever played; simply superb!

As far as GOW3 goes, no I haven’t played it but I do own it. At the moment, i’m going through the GOW Collection and Ghosts of Sparta on the PSP; both of which I am thoroughly enjoying.

As far as the fake stuff goes TEA it wasn’t just the Motorstorm and KZ2 renders that bugged me, it was also the FFVII demo too. It all just created an air of smoke and mirrors for me really. To be fair though, whatever people thought of KZ2 as a game, I thought that visually speaking at least, it gave a good job of looking like it belonged in the same ballpark as the E3 2005 renders.

    #53 4 years ago

Wow. I haven’t seen that “KZ2 vid” for ages, but it still looks amazing.

Jaws dropped and grown men turned into giddy little kids when that was first shown.

No visuals have made that much of an impact since.

I know some of the PS3 exclusives are visually stunning, but they’re not the technical leap that truly deserves the name ‘next-gen’.

They’re basically made exactly the same way as last-gen games, just with ‘more’. Nothing really new or different. Basically just the same techniques, just higher res with more effects.

Even in that “KZ2 vid” you can pick out technical leaps. NPC AI seems light years ahead of current stuff. Amazing audio, with explosions and speech coming from all directions. Intricate animations on fingers and clothing. Action going on simultaneously in different places. It’s almost like being there and making the choices rather than the on-rails, corridoor feel that current gen is only able to give, no matter how hard it tries.

When I see these kind of things, my jaw might drop again.

Until then, all high-end graphics look about the same to me…

I was actually speaking to G1GA, stolen. I haven’t seen the guy on PSN for 6 months plus and even so he doesn’t play anything besides Starcraft 2 and COD and a few racers here and there. So of course he wouldn’t see anything jaw dropping. Oh btw God of War 3 is better looking than Uncharted 2 we just chose to always say Uncharted 2 because its overall the better package over GOW3.

As far as fake stuff goes Stolen I want you to take a look at this video. This “event” took place before the 2005 E3 show. Please point out anything real in this video :D Hold onto your socks XBOTS I’m taking you back to the future! Where next gen started because M$ said so bitches…. that madden vid looked pretty real eh Stolen ;) Bonus points for anyone who can point out Mike Bowden in the crowd of paid XBOTS. :D

Thanks for the supportive comments from everyone who gave them. Its nice to see there are still plenty of inTelligent pEople here, regArdless of the trolls.

I think we are starting to see PC games that *clearly* outstrip console titles from a graphic perspective, but when the most enjoyment I’m getting out of gaming right now is Pokemon Black on the DS, I just… find it hard to care one way or the other.

Graphics are cool, but they don’t make a game, only add to it. A good looking game can still be shit game, but a game that plays well will always be a good game.

My benchmarks for graphics right now are games like Okami and The Last Guardian, where they don’t simply attempt to look “realistic”, but provide the game with a unique visual identity that adds to the experience.

That’s how graphics should be utilised.

If I want “realism”, my house comes with a door, that leads to the outside world.

@#28 Erthazus, Dear boy you are the retarded one :) I was speaking about the leap from NOW 2011 to 2015 when these consoles will most likely be out. THAT leap with graphics will determine if these consoles will be worthwhile which as I said kind of depends on the way PC graphics goes. I’m not taking about 2007 to now.

Also those shots are not from ingame so they are invalid :)

Please read next time. :) (Oh and just so you know, I’ve played all of those games on PC ;))

#27 ManuOtaku, thankyou dear Sir :P

full 1080p resolution and at 60(61 to be safe)fps for every single game released would have me spend $250 right now for new consoles. Rase the capabilities and graphics up a bit and i’d spend $300 right now.
Do i need these things now? No. Can i wait for the Console Developers to take their time to make sure they get it right this time around? Yes, yes i can.
No more major hardware failures (stupid xbox360, lets keep it at 10% or less next gen please.)

We still got life left in our 2006-2007 machines so im in no rush. Take your time guys, make sure its stellar when released.

@50: That’s the reason PC gamers are angry. The video cards we have now are 10 times better than what we had in 2005 and no engines take care of that power because devs prefer to program for the lowest common denominator: consoles. Consoles are slowing down the evolution of PC gfx.

    #59 4 years ago
  60. Gekidami

^ You can blame yourselves for that. As Crytek puts it, PC is a platform with little return and is riddled with piracy. The PC crowd have pretty much drove devs away from it, to console.

  61. aleph31

If social gaming succeeds and outperforms economically console gaming, we’ll end up seeing comments from console fanboys in the same line than those we see from PC fanboys nowadays :)

At the end of the day, both sides have a different share of the truth

    #61 4 years ago
  62. spiderLAW

Graphics difference between consoles and PC are there, but not much to give a shit about really. Im currently playing through Crysis1, again (to see what Erth always raves about that i must have missed the first time around) on MAX EVERYTHING at 54-59fps (with Realism mod 39-41fps, dont know why the big drop but still good) and really…it isnt all that much better looking than what we got going on with consoles. well, there is a big difference in some ways BUT it isnt enough to give a shit about really. When we see that Unreal Tech demo recently displayed realized on PC at 60fps, then we can say PC shits all over current consoles and consoles really need an upgrade.
I also played Metro 2033 at 1080p on MAX at 45fps, Bulletstorm 1080p MAX at 60fps, Half-Life 2 Episode 2 1080p Max at 60fps and really, the consoles we have now are doing just fine.

You lot really need to look at yourselves.

I wouldn’t be surprised if MS had already got the specs for their new console down already. It takes time to get it to a position where it can be a force in the market place. PLus they will be developing its own DX based OS that runs on it, so it takes time to get that fleshed out, tested and working correctly.

Oh please. Valve would like to have a chat with you, along with Stardock, Blizzard and CD Projekt. They seem to do ok for being PC centric Developers who actually make games for the strength of the PC. So if PC’s have little return, then these guys didn’t get the memo. As for the piracy thing, if Crysis was so badly pirated, then where did they get the money from to develop a new multiplatform engine and buy out at least 2 Dev houses? Oh yeah, the magical money tree at the back of the garden.
