Treyarch made Modern Warfare 2′s sales its benchmark

Tuesday, 8th February 2011 01:48 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar has said the Black Ops developer had a lofty target in its sights: Modern Warfare 2′s crown.

“Every developer dreams of making the No.1 selling title in the history of gaming,” said, speaking to MCV.

“You want to make the biggest, strongest, highest-rated, most critically acclaimed and best-selling video game on the planet.

“We looked at Modern Warfare 2 and said: ‘What an amazing benchmark, let’s go get it’.”

Despite Black Ops’ outstripping of its brethren in rate of sales, 2009′s titan still haunts the Treyarch team.

“It drives a lot of what we do everyday,” Vonderhaar said. “It is a huge inspiration to us, and for us to even be in that league, that’s fantastic.”

Thanks, GoNintendo.

Yeah i don’t think we might see another hype train for a title like MW2 ever again.

cod games are very good fps shooters. awesome fun mp arcade shooters….but i´m not hyped by any release anymore. they are just all the same. still i like them and i understand why they sell so well – they are just a blast to play. some new polish and improvement is needed though otherwise i see the crown on anothers head soon with battlefileld 3 coming…battlefield always was the better game anyway imo…but you can´t really compare…

@3 – It made a billion dollars. I hope it did. Lol!

Look at Treyarch showing off, hehe. Cute. Once they were the ‘lame’ developers of the series, bringing gamers a hosh-posh title to vile away time before the ‘real’ developers brought out the ‘real’ goods.

Now with Infinity Wards literally in shambles, and Black Ops selling more than maybe the Bible itself, Treyarch finds itself as the premier developers of the series.

    How tables turn. Remarkable.

    Indeed Teabag.

It’s interesting to note that while Black Ops may have outsold MW2, it hasn’t been able to keep much more than half of its players on the PC.

The original Modern Warfare was relatively quickly shoved to the back of the bus when MW2 came out, but currently roughly half the numbers I noted as playing on Steam around release are back on MW2.

I’m guessing people who were thrilled by MW2 are behind the huge boost to Black Ops, but Treyarch obviously still couldn’t keep them interested, at least if those numbers are an indication.

You can put lipstick on a pig…
