Porting Torchlight to 360 was a “challenge,” says Runic

Friday, 4th February 2011 16:07 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Runic Games’ Max Schafer has said that porting over Torchiight to Xbox Live Arcade has been a “challenge,” but added a console version of the game was something it’s wanted to do for a while.

“It’s a challenge getting this kind of game… over to the consoles,” Schafer told Gama, further commenting: “We’ve wanted forever… to be able to play Torchlight or Diablo kinds of games on the couch.”

“Everyone has pretty well thought-out theories of how you would do it, but until you dig in, you don’t really know. But it helps to look at it like any other challenge: “A lot of iteration,” he explains. “Try something out; if it works, use that theory for other things, and then keep redoing it until it feels right.”

But despite the challenges it had, Schafer reckons Runic is on to a winner with Torchlight XBLA.

“We can’t wait to see what people think — but at the same time, we’re a little nervous. But it feels right when we play it. There are guys in the office that prefer to play it on Xbox now, and that’s what makes me think we’re onto something.”

Torchlight releases at some point this year for XBLA.

You just aren’t “getting it”. Bringing a keyboard and mouse interface to consoles is a nightmare for developers. It’s one of the main reasons games like World of Warcraft will never come to console.

Just look at Dragon Age, for anyone who has played both versions (PC/360) will know the 360 version is fucking awful due to the interface. Mass Effect is another…

@4, this is not the only article on the subject, they’ve talked about it before. Neither does the article mention tech being the challenge.

Oh, and I can back my shit up mate

Unless you think there’s a dude with my exact username with 22 hours of Torchlight on his Steam account, you trolling little failure fuck.

Is this game fun in single player? It looks like co-op would make it alot more interesting?

@7 Multiplayer is coming for the sequel.

But yes, this game is great in single player, but I would honestly suggest anyone with even a half decent PC try out the Steam demo, and buy it for the PC if you like it. The 360 port looks competent, but the PC game is exceptionally in all regards. It’s modding capabilities are especially fun.

Thanks, i had heard the sequel would have co-op, i thought XBOX Live would be the ideal testing grounds for a console dungeon crawler, i guess they will see how well this one sells first! ;)

Gotta disagree strongly, I played Torchlight and Dragon Age on the PC, but used a controller to play them both. I didn’t have ANY issues and much preferred the controller to the KB, hence, the reason I did it.

For some reason I feel that Porting is a word that almost means that version is going to be the worst.

    Porting is a negative term.

Still getting this for my Xbox tho!

@#5: tard explanation. Mass Effect doesn’t even have clucky controls that need micro-managment for it to be a nightmare to control on consoles. Eck, Mass Effect controls on PC are the bastard late port.

Fantastic game that comes highly recommended. I heard a rumour that it was done using the Ogre3D graphics library, which makes me happy because that’s the one I use xD
