Gears VGAs annnouncement postponed

Gears 32

Nelson’s just announced that tonight’s planned Gears of War announcement for the Video Game Awards has been canceled.

“I wanted to share this with you and let you know that while these are never easy decisions, we can tell you that what we have to share for the franchise in 2011 will definitely be worth the wait and we look forward to working with our partner at Spike on sharing this world premier news when it is ready,” said the Major in a blog on his site.

A couple of weeks back, Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski teased a Gears-related reveal for tonight’s event, where he added it was “not what you’re expecting.”

Gears for Kinect had also been rumoured for tonight.

But it will happen no more. At least not tonight.

Gears of War 3 launches next year for Xbox 360.

Epic &/or Microsoft afraid of having Gears being overshadowed? Especially by a Sony IP, if I’m right then it’s simply just a marketing decision. Wonder how much MS is paying to keep it exclusive, i believe Epic owns the Gears IP.

Got to be so they can separate their announcements from the flurry of Sony announcements coming tonight.

Xbox 360 has no games.

One figures that it’s indeed because of Uncharted 3. Gears 2 looks nice, but compared to Uncharted 2 it’s full of ugly low-res textures. In Gears 3 they’re trying to put a lot of action on screen and this probably forced them to use low-res textures for not important parts like rocks and walls and showing it when everyone will start comparing it to Uncharted 3…
@6: Gear IP is owned by Microsoft. In fact they fully fund the development of Gears 1,2 and 3. I have to give Epic credit – unless you start carefully examining your surrounding you usually don’t notice low-res textures. And characters are detailed and beautiful.

@9, i’ve heard the same statement #10 mentions, so i believe Gears is one of the last major 3rd party exclusives funded by a 1st party manufacturer, although so is Agent if R* ever fnishes that.(i believe games like Yakuza is exclusive because of marketing, not 1st party funding, the largest demographic to buy Sega’s Yakuza would be the Japs, but the 360 is a flop there, though it’s possible Sony does fund it, i doubt it)

@9 Gears Of war is owned by Epic Games

and they can release after 3rd installment to any platform. To Ps3 or PC.

MS is compensating Epic to keep it exclusive, other than Halo, MS has fuck all as a console shifter, not being a fanboy, but all of the good games on 360 are available on pc/PS3 too.

Well if they don’t want their game to look more ridiculous than it already is, it is a wise decision.

I still think that Uncharted 3 should have it’s own show reveal or something.

VGA is cheap as fuck. So Ms doing it with the biggest franchise they have is a right decision.

@15, Halo is, Gears is large, but not that large.

New games are being announced and shown off, so yeah. But the actual awards? Not one bit.

I’m guessing this is Microsoft that have done this. They kept delaying halo announcements back in the day. I was prob looking forward to this announcement the most. o well..

@17

The award show? No.

The announcements? YES.

Although, this year has NPH and the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. That beats the HELL out of last year’s… FUCK JERSEY SHORE.

@12 Read somewhere that MS paid for Gears 1-3 exclusivity, so anymore after the 3rd can be multi-format.
And Cliff was right, we was not expecting this :)

i’m not trying to be a fanboy saying this as i have no allegiance but is this technically a admission from ms that they dont think gears is as good as the competitions games and thus had to pull it back?

#23

AHA-Lambda

why does everyone think this? I seriously doubt MS would pull a reveal over a competitors game when said game series sells better than the other AND MS is rumoured to have other stuff there.

PS: get hype guys! ;)

Jeesh, whats sure is that MS seriously need SOMETHING announced soon. Theres up and down years for all the platforms due to the time it takes to actually make the games but its really apparent on 360. 2011 is looking like 2009 for MS, they seriously need to invest in first party studios.

I find it a little funny that not a single PS3 or 360 game has made it into the list of 20 best-selling console games, infact most of them are Nintendo games with the exception of Gran Turismo 3 & GTA: San Andreas(PS2), that shows that gimmicky games sell better than expensive AAA & technologically innovative games, yet Nintendo get such love for being the innovative one but their software has always been average at best, quite ironic imo.

@23
That link is abit generalistic really, its pretty much saying that theres stuff other then UC3 thats worth a look. Despite what the title may suggest it isnt talking about a single game being a big announcement.

it got cancelled because it will be over shadowed not just by uncharted 3, but the lineup of ps3 games to be shown, LOL.

wow that blows…it may be a PR move because of over-shadowing, or maybe it wasn’t ready to be shown or imo maybe they are pulling a valve and cancelling it and then just making an announcement anyway to surprise us, i can only hope lol…but yeah they were probably worried about gears being overshadowed by the sony games…

^ Seeing as it was probably a trailer, therefore already recorded before hand, it ‘not being ready’ dosnt seem very likely.
