No, i believe that’s actual sales, you underestimate it’s popularity.

    Hahaha!

Crysis – He was joking about the Move shipped/sold thing. It’s definitely sales for sure this time.

  5. Razor

    Fuck, that’s impressive.

Not sure those 5.5 million will be impressed with the game though. I’m still not sure if I love it or hate it.

So is Gran Turismo 5 the best selling PS3 game to date? I think GT5 prologue previously held that title with 5.09mil, according to PD’s own site, which all have slightly different numbers to the ones you have shown JC. http://www.polyphony.co.jp/english/list.html

Oh hang on…so it’shipped. Once again I should read the background.

It was only number 8 on NDP?

It’s not flippin’ shipping numbers, it’s sold! :D

    From the press release:

“As of December 6, more than 5.5 million units of Gran Turismo 5 have been sold worldwide. Gran Turismo 5 will further continue to contribute to the expansion of the PS3 platform.”

Why do people care whether it’s shipped or sold anyway?

    #9 3 years ago
  10. Crysis

Should knock down Ape Escape & Zelda to become #12 best selling video game franchise & #3 best selling 1st party game franchise with 61.86mil sold in the series.

Wow, Euros really love their GT!

@12 Please never use that phrase again, you sound like TEA. One is more than enough.

    #13 3 years ago
  14. Johnny Cullen

So, it turns out, it is shipping numbers. I give up.

    #14 3 years ago
  15. Blerk

glol, time for a cup of tea, Johnny!

Anyway, we’re all Euros here, Aimless! Apart from those of us who aren’t.

  16. Johnny Cullen

Tea? Blerk, come the end of the weekend, I’ll be found dead somewhere after consuming a fuckton of drink.

    Most likely.

  17. Aimless

@15 I am not a form of currency.

The phrase just annoys me. It’s like “youths” being applied to everyone under 30.

Anyway, before the rioting starts I suppose I should point out that when Sony ships something they’ve sold it to a retailer. Those figures are actually the most accurate numbers they’re likely to get, at least in the US; the NPDs are full of blind spots.

    #17 3 years ago
  18. JonFE

Johnny, if I were you, I would treat all numbers reported by the publishers (especially Sony ones) as “shipped”, not “sold”… even those that explicitly state *sold*.

    :D

    #18 3 years ago
  19. Razor

Yeah, all Sony numbers are dubious and must be treated with caution.

    #19 3 years ago
  20. Erthazus

@19, not true at all. GT5 sells always fast.

5-6 million for GT5 is nothing special.

GT5: Prologue surpassed GT4: Prologue by 4 million already.

    #20 3 years ago
  21. Blerk

You didn’t need the word ‘Sony’ in that post, Razor. :-)

    #21 3 years ago
  22. Razor

@20 Yeah, but it’s shipped, which means absolutely nothing, just like Sony’s Move. Anyone can ship millions of copies of product X.

Until we get solid, watertight sell-through numbers, then any number Sony gives is suspect, whether they’re realistic or not.

@Blerk, but let’s be fair, Sony is generally worse than MS and Ninty :P

Why don’t Sony ever give sales numbers like the rest of the industry?

Time to get some industry standard for reporting units sold.

  26. The Hindle

5.5m in 12 days holy shit, it will be past 7m by the time this year is out.

    #26 3 years ago
  27. Erthazus

@Razor, you can’t ship all you want. Retailers buy copies if they think thats WORTH it.

Shipped is basically SOLD for Sony.

    #27 3 years ago
  28. The Hindle

Sony have always give out shipped numbers and considering that GT 5 is the biggest ever PS3 exclusive id wager its easily sold those 5.5m.

    #28 3 years ago
  29. Aimless

@24 They do. Which is to say they use whichever figure looks better.

    #29 3 years ago
  30. Lahanas

Τhe best racer this gen, but sony fucked up its launch.

    #30 3 years ago
  31. Razor

Erthazus, shipping is not “basically sold” as (most) retailers have an agreement whereby they can sell stuff back to Sony/MS/Ninty if it doesn’t sell.

    #31 3 years ago
  32. Erthazus

@31 That is true, can’t disagree with that.
but still i think sony is doing well with GT5.

Shipped sold or whatever the thing is out of stock at both Amazon.co.uk (I’m not counting resellers or their marketplace) and at Shopto (the retailers that sold it at around £35), I know the signature ed sold out thanks to pricedrops and the bundle was out of stock at shopto.
    So they are experiencing demand.
Play and Game still have it though bundle could be out of stock at game (it’s on preorder though the date is set for 3rd December).

  34. Jan

If everybody was counting in “shipped” and not sold, then every time a company release a game they would say: we shipped 5mil copy, since there is a shitloads of retailers out there, and you get nowhere with that.

33@ You most be the worst online shopper ever?

    Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)
    In stock.

    #34 3 years ago
  35. Aimless

@34 Except that games cost money to print and retailers won’t buy millions of copies just because you say they should.

Channel stuffing is an expensive business that will always come back to bite you.

    #35 3 years ago
  36. Crysis

Shipping is virtually selling, yes certain retailers can return the stock if it fails to sell, but these retailers do their own research, judging by preorders & general interest so they can predict how many will sell & unless the game flops, it will likely sell regardless, so to ship 5.5mil within this time means retailers have recieved great demand, they wouldn’t order that many for nothing.

    #36 3 years ago
  37. typeface

@34 you do realise you’re showing the link to a marketplace item right or do you not read when you just click on the link :P

Dispatched from and sold by The Island Game Store.

is clearly mentioned below the 47.99 pricetag. Amazon is out of stock, people and businesses can sell their goods used or new on amazon and play. You probably really aren’t a good online shopper yourself :P. I just hunt for bargains but marketplace sellers aren’t the same unless it says fulfilled

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B002BWONDK/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&qid=1291977616&sr=8-1&condition=all

Might actually help you a little.

Edit: p.s. I’ve mentioned not counting marketplace or resellers too btw

edit 2: Apparently Game has a few more signature editions but they’re not at the sale price anymore.

I think shipped here means sold, if you look exactly to the numbers beings shipped and compare it to the individuals sales like for example for Japan the game shipped about 550k and the numbers of Media create for the two week was 480k, as in link below :

    http://nintendoeverything.com/56891/

My point is thats the units being sold are closely to the numbers being shipped !

So sorry for my bad english : )

This goes to show how not-so-popular the ps3 is in n. America. Since when does ANY game sell SO much more in Europe. It’s a shame too because gt5 is awesome and sony (why do people capitalize sony?) has a great lineup next year.

    #43 3 years ago
  44. Crysis

@43, America as a whole typically prefers companies from their own country regardless of quality, this isn’t anti-360 slander or anything, just an observation that American companies (more than others)tend to take too many short cuts & the ‘reds’ forgive them so they continue to purchase second rate products, i know soo many Americans online that bought a 360 ONLY because MS is based in America (despite using other countries to manufacture their products), if i even mention Sony, they make some pathetic WW2 referance, not saying all American’s are like that & only Americans’ are guilty, but the more vocal people online on live unfortunately tend to be racist American mid teens & that’s a huge demographic so that kind of ruins America’s overall image for gamers.
I honestly don’t know what’s worst, the squeeky voiced loudmouths or the racist fools, but they tend to be the only voices i here when i’m not set up on an Australian server :’(

    #44 3 years ago
  45. stretch215

@44 I agree. Us Americans can be patriotic to a fault. It’s especially ridiculous to not buy a game system because of where the company is based. I own both a 360 and a ps3. I bought the 360 first (cheaper) but when I saw the direction sony was taking their games I had to get a ps3. It looks like the rest of this gen. will belong to sony, as far as quality exclusives go anyways. Multiplatform games tend to be better on 360.

What, like the Japanese are any different…?

    #46 3 years ago
  47. OlderGamer

Um the Wii is the top selling system in the USA. It is a Japanese system. While we may not love the Wii, this generation is not a two horse race. And the Wii is miles ahead.

And not calling anyone anything, but the west(both NA and EU) buys a hell alot more jp games/systems then JP buys western made games/systems.

    #47 3 years ago
  48. DaMan

does any publisher even track the numbers sold to customers? I’m pretty sure every game’s sales are the ones sold to retailers, shipped that is.

    #48 3 years ago
  49. Crysis

@47, good point, but i cannot personally comment on that since i don’t know many Japenese people, but i’ve heard the upper class are incredibly racist from people who have been over there, but i cannot comment on that myself, but the sales may have more to do with Sony’s varied amount of games, i mean just go through a list of PS3 exlcusive games & i could bet that several of them have funny names you’ve never heard of before, but the 360 only has a handful.

  50. keyvan812

Every time Sony says “Sold” , someone should contact with the company and ask if they really mean “sold” or “shipped” ! and usually they say that they mean “shipped” not “sold” LoL

    #50 3 years ago
  51. keyvan812

@ DaMan : Only publisher and companies like NPD can track the sale number. Publisher track sales number because they should replace and resupply the stocks. so they should aware of sales. Plus by tracking the serial number of their product that retailers register in their database , they can know the exact number of sale.
