“Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format,” says Xbox UK boss

Wednesday, 22 September 2010 15:13 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Blu-ray is going down like all the others before it, according to Xbox UK boss Stephen McGill.

McGill told X360A that the format will be “passed by,” like other formats before it.

“I think people may have spoken about that originally, but that’s long gone,” he said.

“I think people now recognise what a smart decision it was to keep the pricing low, and actually Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format.

“People have moved through from DVDs to digital downloads and digital streaming, so we offer full HD 1080p Blu-ray quality streaming instantly, no download, no delay.

“Who needs Blu-ray?”

    #4 4 years ago
  5. Freek

Just because it’s 1080p doesn’t make it blu ray quality. Streaming is still limited by bandwith wich means the bitt rate of the video and audio is lower then a disc based format. Wich results in a loss of quality.

Lets not get into number of discs, it’s as dumb as saying streaming is as good as a disc.

Games routinly came on multipell discs in the past, it diden’t matter then and it doesn’t matter now.

  12. spiderLAW

Bluray FTW – until they release a format that can utilize the full original quality of 6k film

    #12 4 years ago
  13. spiderLAW

@11 i would agree with that sort of except you are saying that we shouldn’t expect games to advance as the world of technology advances. While it was accepted back in the day, there was no way around it and so it was okay to have multiple discs. Now there are many options instead of using multiple discs and for a company to disregard those options is just unacceptable.

    #13 4 years ago
  14. orakaa

says the guy from a firm that launched HD-DVD…

Truth is, people are not ready to go full digital movies and/or games.
The storage is not that reliable in itself, you don’t “feel like you HAVE the product you’ve bought”, etc.

Having a disc still is more reliable and people tend to follow this trend. Sure, Steam works well, just as PSN games or XBL arcade games… but it’s a whole another story for movies and heavy games (look at the complaints raised by people when they heard you could install up to 10 Go of game data with GT5 ?).
Installing a 200 Mo game via PSN or XBL is NOT the same as having a 4 Go 1080p divX or a 10 Go game (at that rate, even with a 320 Go hard drive, you are VERY limited… and if your disk gets broken… all that much data to re-pay for or “only” to re-download ?)

Yep, they appear to have gone all a bit Sony in the PR department. BR will obviously pass on eventually but the “we offer full HD 1080p Blu-ray quality streaming instantly” comment is pure bullshit. Can we have the MS which talked sense back please.

    #16 4 years ago
  17. LordCancer

@11 I’d agree except before there wasn’t much of an alternative and now there is. avoiding the cost of an unproven format and considering blu-ray wasn’t even ready for the 360 launch it was okay for them to skip it. shit talking blu-ray as if a realistic alternative exists for a next gen system is ludicrous. of course bloated hdds may be microsofts idea of screwing us for the foreseeable future. all those on bargain broadband can spend a week downloading halo 7 on there $300 hard drive!

    #17 4 years ago
  18. Freek

Something as minor as changing a disc once or twice during a game is still totally acceptable, it doesn’t impact gameplay in a meaningfull way.

    #18 4 years ago
  19. SplatteredHouse

HD-DVD, and still, you think you have ANY business commenting on success of media formats?
This is the UK boss for Microsoft, now? I want that other guy, that actually spoke some modicum of sense, back.

wait, lol are you sure he’s the UK boss?
“so we offer full HD 1080p Blu-ray quality streaming instantly, no download, no delay.”
I’ve yet to notice anything like that, from my Xbox 360. Plus, I’m not even under any download limit/throttling! But, hey, perhaps that does happen, in Microsoft Towers, let’s give the man the benefit of the doubt, here. :D

Microsoft, and funny-talk, they’re two synominous terms, increasingly.

    #19 4 years ago
  20. spiderLAW

Open your mind a little Freek. We are not saying there is anything wrong with the matter of changing discs. Its the reason WHY we have to that is the problem. Read #13 and #17 again and pay close attention to what we are saying.

    #20 4 years ago
  21. LordCancer

you really want to swap disc on the next xbox freek?

    #21 4 years ago
  22. Freek

no, i’m saying it doesn’t matter. There’s plenty of good reasons to move on from DVDs but the amount of discs a game comes on isn’t one of them.
Developers will always look to go to the maximum amount or beyond. Even with blu ray it’s going to happen.

    #22 4 years ago
  23. DaMan

    OMG how dare they.

btw MS never really gave a shit about hd-dvd, they just backed it up because they didn’t want to help their rivals. while blu ray failure would be fatal for Sony.

    #23 4 years ago
  24. Dr.Ghettoblaster

    “Who needs Blu-ray?”

Those who want the best quality available today, that’s who.

You telling me this big Microsoft exec doesn’t have a 50+ inch 1080p flatscreen in his home and he’s NOT watching movies on blu-ray??? lol

    #24 4 years ago
  25. Kerplunk

These companies with their selective memories:

Sony – “Rumble is old news. Nobody uses that any more”

MS – “Blu-ray is going to surpassed.” (HD-DVD never happened, right?”

Nintendo – “It’s not about tech, it’s about fun” – yeah, and you’re the only company than named a console after it’s CPU power (N64)

Scarily, this makes Apple sound credible by comparison (middleware arguments notwithstanding).

    #25 4 years ago
  26. Gadzooks!

Bluray really isnt needed this gen at all, but increased texture quality will mean next gen machines will definitely need something with blurays storage capacity.

I very much hope this PR mouthpiece is not suggesting that the next xbox will be digital download only.

    #26 4 years ago
  27. NomadsoulZA

“Who needs Blu-Ray?” has to be one of the most retarded comments I’ve heard in a while. I’m no Sony fan boy…but they should just accept that HDDVD bombed because of its lack of capacity and poor adoption.

Blu-ray discs are going to be holding upwards of 200GB in the future and the number of marketing possibilities is staggering. For example, they’re already plotting to release (on the same blu-ray) a full feature film, all the extras as well as the movie-tie-in video game (yes, they’ve all been bad…but still).

Until high speed broadband becomes something every house has (like a toaster or tv) and until we have hard drives that can handle hundreds (or thousands) of high definition (60GB+) videos etc, I think that blu rays will be around…for maybe, well…just a “little” bit longer :)

    #27 4 years ago
  28. Eregol

With games approaching a size of 40gb+ a download and store system is never going to take off.
There’s never enough storage space, and the bandwidth just can’t take the strain of downloads of that size.

Plus, there are those of us who can’t afford to keep buying new titles without selling second hand or trading in, so a physical product is always going to be better than a digital product.

Unless they can come up with some sort of digital exchange system, which I doubt is possible.

    A couple of things.

First BluRay is not going to dethrone the current and long time standard DVD until:

The price of BD is the exactly same price as a walmart standard DVD.

Every DVD system ALSO plays BD.

Now why did MS back HD DVD?

    Not to take down BD.

Think about it, MS is not pushing HD DVDs, never were. there were buying time to roll out their own DD movie/TV store AND Netflix. Both offer HD and both work with the xb360.

Infact Netflix on 360 caused Sony to rush along and follow them.

I own BD/PS3 yada yada. Don’t often use it for BD movies. Why would I? I rent movies, but even renting BD costs me more. Buying a 30usd BD movie is just insane. Same movie will run half or one third of that in SD. And then agaon there is the whole Netflix factor. HD on PS3/xb360.

BD is a non factor imo. I think it is a niche. But I see it being leap frogged down the road.

    My two cents.

@31 – It’s as much a stretch as those covered in @30 response. (Good call @30! – I forgot about those – possibly because they’re not in the console game any more.)

If anything, it makes N64′s naming seem like a copy of the logic for 32X naming. Not a product you really want to copy too heavily really. That said, it’s still only Nintendo that swagger around pretending that technology and performance isn’t a factor in console hardware.

The bigger point still stands: They’re all full of it.

no for once i agree with MS

  39. Crysis

As long as the internet remains unaccessible & incosistent to many people around the globe, physical media should definately NOT be ignored, & it’s clear from how fast we’re growing that DVDs won’t cut it next gen for gaming consoles (think of watching a dvd quality movies spread from several Video CDs, it’s possible, but irritatingm, i remember doing it with my PSOne though :D), well Nintendo will continue to use weak optical disks, blu ray is the best choice for now.

    4. All 37.9 million ps3 owners just never buy another game as long as they have their consoles.(or the pc and blu-ray players in home are just thrown away for no reason)

  49. Galactic_Barret

The only thing dumber that the statement is the superfluous attempts at damage control.

Of course there won’t be a BD > DVD situation as it was with DVD > VHS. 2 seconds of thought will say ‘Well, DVD wasn’t backwards compatible with VHS like BD is. Oh yeah, and wasn’t DVD easier to back because it was less expensive, in material costs?’.

Its silly, this fear of evolving tech. Its similar with 3D TVs: You can say its useless, that you won’t buy it, whatever, but its not just for tech-heads anymore; Its becoming as much a standard as the market will allow. Being niche, considered the next best successor, compared to a (near?) decade old format is nothing to scoff at.

BD won the format war, its time to move on. Really, I wouldn’t steer you wrong.

Edit: Realize I forgot about digital. As long as cable companies and Apple continue to provide DD services, and both surviving disc formats can be ripped, digital will always win out. However, quality-wise, BD is the format to beat.

    #49 4 years ago
  50. DrDamn

It’s more the quality which is being questioned. The streaming service does 1080p yes – Blu-ray quality no. Max data rate on the 360 streaming service is currently 5Mbps, this compares to 48Mbps Max for a Blu-ray. Quite a big and noticeable difference.

The interesting thing is that the streaming service can scale up as higher bandwidths become available and more affordable – for both the consumer and provider. The 5Mbps cap is something MS is currently imposing, but it could be changed. It also dynamically adapts to your connection speed – rather than being set for all people.
