Spencer: Kinect to be “the biggest platform launch ever,” no need for 3D right now “from creative standpoint”

Microsoft Game Studios’ Phil Spencer has told Eurogamer the launch of Kinect will be the biggest for any one platform. “Ever.”

Spencer did admit there were still consumers who were still skeptical about buying it, but was still confidant on the motion system’s success.

“We’re investing in this so people will know Kinect is here,” he said.

“Retailers are telling us from their buzz and what they hear from people walking the store asking questions that this is going to be the biggest consumer home electronics launch of this year, and they’re gearing up towards that.

“Given all the momentum that I see and the way we’re investing, I’ll bet this is the biggest platform launch ever.”

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg has already said the company expects to sell 3 million units of Kinect by Christmas, while Kinect boss Kudo Tsunoda’s said it will “blow away iPad sales.”

Kinect launches worldwide in November.

No need for 3D right now “from a creative standpoint”

As for 3D, a feature Sony is pushing hard with PS3, Spencer said he didn’t see the big fuss over it “from a creative standpoint.”

“The first few times it was novel, but I think we’re going to want to see some kind of evolutionary step and creativity in using 3D that will really drive consumer demand,” he said.

“You see that even on the silver screen – when 3D movies came out it used to spike box office sales. Now the novelty has worn off a little bit and people are saying well, what is remarkable about this?”

There’s a full interview through there. Spencer was speaking at TGS.

But it probably will be the biggest platform launch if MS say so. They’re clearly putting their entire weight behind it.

    His own words:

describe how I feel about Kinect. So far it’s looked novel, all that wacky jumping and waving rather than waggling a Wiimote… but I want to see evidence of a solid evolutionary step and creativity with Kinect before I even think of buying it.

Oh, please, please, make it go away… make it be a disaster as the Jaguar, 32X, Powerglove or any other crappy project the video game industry has ever seen…

Seriously, this is NOT a progress into video game, it is the exact opposite: casual wii-sport-like games ? on-rail games ? a LOT less controls in the way you play ?

Oh, come on ! Let’s hope the “families” won’t fall for this scam (it’s their main target, let’s be honest)

Here in Australia, aside from a few tech blogs, there’s been almost no mention of it.
They’ll really need to step up their advertising on mass (print, radio and television)media if they want to increase consumer awareness over here.
I hope Kinect does do well… it’s an interesting bit of kit.

And I don’t get what the big deal about 3d is… Avatar and Batman: AA – GOTY both came out on xbox in 3d.

@Jan The Suikoden franchise is on the DS and sega saturn too btw. And how does my favourite game which isn’t even made by sony but Konami corrialate with being a fanboy? And i hate kinect as i feel it nothing more than a waste of space, move is ok nothing great, wii is best for motion.

I feel it is useless as a hardcore gamer as it has othing to offer me but is more of a sellout to take some of the wiis fanbase.

@9 Yeah we’re Sony fanboys, that’s why all I’ve been playing since its release is Halo: Reach. I just think that Kinect is a stupid idea that just makes the people using it look retarded and it has no use to core gamers. Sony’s approach to motion control is spot on, it appeals to core gamers and casual gamers. Yes it is a rip-off of the wii, but alot of gamers don’t want a wii because it’s too casual.

The tech is great, however so many genres of games carnt be done on kinect. FPS carnt unless you put the game completely on rails. Its a great idea, but with movement and procise directions from a controller many of the games you have today wont ever be possible.

@9 perhaps that smell is you and you need a shower. if your stuck with just an xbox and you see that microsoft has killed off or lost all of its exclusive game studios and the one they have left is pushing casual games hardcore with a $150 add on you’d be right to ask what the hell is going on?

They lost bungie, they lost mass effect, rare doesn’t even make real games anymore, they managed to turn that xbot gabe newel against them and even epics unreal series on ps3 has better community features then the xbox live version which we pay for and had the price raised and is supposedly superior but in reality isn’t.

microsoft doesn’t make games anymore so its not fanboyism when people wake up and say holy shit the ship is sinking. you wanna go down with the titanic be my guest. while your acting all defensive be careful cause your going to end up with an xbox wii and shit games. fuck at this point nintendo makes more games then microsoft.

a repackaged one trick pony is still a one trick pony and im bored of watching, playing and buying the same trick.
