Activision looking to pass MW2 sales record with Black Ops

Activision has said it wants to beat Modern Warfare 2′s sales with Black Ops.
Call of Duty’s European GM, Michael Sportouch, has told MCV that the publisher intends to surpass the sales record set last year by the Infinity Ward mega-shooter.
“We’ve a fantastic game and a fantastic marketing campaign so our ambition is to set another record like we did with Modern Warfare 2,” he said.
“The resources invested behind Black Ops in terms of development of the game and the marketing are the highest ever for Activision. Our ambition is not only to be the biggest game but also the biggest entertainment launch of the year.”
Sportouch also confirmed the Black Ops’ ad campaign will kick off tomorrow, with a 60-second TV spot that will air during the Euro 2012 qualifier between England and Bulgaria.
After that, he insisted it would be “non-stop”.
Treyarch blew its load on Black Ops multiplayer in LA last night, confirming new gameplay modes and thensome.

It won’t. For the MW2 game there was a perfect marketing campaign. Everything what they showed was just perfect.
Black Ops? Not so much. I remember Microsoft E3 Press Conference and campaign was just OK, with even worse graphics and design than Modern Warfare 2.
+ it looks the same, some people are tired of this franchise, so No.

Actually, they look the same; but not THAT same. Modern Warfare 2 is something; and Black Ops’ something else!

@3 They are both set in the 21 century, both uses the same engine and looks almost the same. Just different developers and ideas.
Ideas won’t resonate much for the consumer.

@4 I’m pretty sure Black Ops is set in the Vietnam war, A.K.A The 20th century.

It’s actually set over several time periods.

@5 Yeah i forgot about that. Black Ops really set in Vietnam War/20th century. Still they look very similar.
It’s still something close to modern.

I’m pretty sure these type of comments were flying around before MW2 launched. Look what happened there.
FIFA, PES, Madden, etc. have fans that dont care if increments are small, as long as there is *something* new in the latest release. CoD is just the same.
The bulk of people that buy CoD dont know who the developer is or what engine is used. They just like to play games, not obsess over irrelevant details.

Incrimental updates matter more in the sports genre due to player roster updates.
More importantly, CoD MW hit verry big. So when a direct sequal was anounced everybody was excited.
That turned into a dissapointment for a portion of the player base after the multiplayer turned into a glitchy mess. So not everybody who bought MW2 will automaticly be looking forward to more CoD. Now they’re bringing another one out a year later.
The question is: will people see this as different enough to give CoD another go? Or are we in Guitar Hero deminishing returns territory?
And lets not forget that there is now strong compition from the Medal of Honor reboot.

i think black ops is going to be more important than most people think in terms of the future direction of this IP. If activision want this to do bigger than MW2 (which i dont think it will) and it doesnt meet this target, what will activision do?
will they see this as a sign of stagnation and pump it out quicker before killing it ala guitar hero? Or will they see sense and realise that matching and exceeding the biggest entertainment launch of all time each year is not a sustainable practice?

given how poo Bad Company 2 is on the PC, I might look at this – providing that it isnt a shoddy port

Some of the new multiplayer modes look really interesting, whether they’re actually fun to play is another matter entirely.

I think people should be very careful expecting too much from a CoD game. I’m baffled as to how people let themselves do it in the first place.
If there’s one thing you can count on with a CoD game it’s 100% predictability and 100% familiarity. That’s why you buy the damn thing – You’ve played it before, and you want more.
If you have expectations beyond that, I’d go for a new IP. I laugh my ass off when I see people going “MW2 didn’t change anything from MW” – Right, genius, just as CoD 2 didn’t change anything from CoD, and CoD 3 didn’t change anything from CoD 2. It’s always been the same fucking game.
You should kinda see a pattern by now, really.
I don’t think it’s gonna beat MW2 personally, but it’s gonna do fine if they adopted the multiplayer style.

1. Who cares except Activision
2. Here’s hoping it’s a top notch quality title worthy of my hard earned $60. If so, I’ll buy it. If not, next please. Life goes on.

im getting the hardened edition. There are factors that work against it that might not allow it to reach MW2 level of sales but there are some factors in its favor. Gameplay looks to be loads better to me.
