Codemasters shows off DiRT 3 in new shots

Wednesday, 11th August 2010 22:19 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Codies has released five lovely new screens for DiRt 3, and it shows cars in different environments.

Codies says it’s “the biggest rally game ever made”.

Out next year, the debut trailer for it was released earlier in the month.
Get it here, and enjoy the shots below.

    Mmmm… pretty

The first image reminds me of Arcade Fire’s The Suburb’s album cover.

I bet some of the really advanced smoke, blur and particle effects in these screenshots will not be in the final game. Probably Photoshopped quite a bit. Looks nice though.

Codies never made ugly racing games in my oppinion, but I’m a lot more interested in how it handles. The sense of physics in the cars of Dirt 2 was the worst I’ve ever seen from Codemasters. It was like the cars were made out of slippery paper.

I’m gonna need at least a demo to decide on this one. I’m not sure I can handle the all out chestbumping and gratuitous dudery of the X-Games.

haha nice. The old Audi is very nice. Even in Germany its hard to spot an old model like this.

Codemasters are well known for doctoring their screenshots.

Mmmm….never witnessed a car racing towards me.

I still don’t understand what’s the point of these bullshots.
No way the game is gonna look this way.

Those screens were released by ourselves labelled as target visuals, they aren’t actual screenshots of the game.

They are intended more to show off the new weather effects, locations and cars.

@11: A while ago Digital Foundry asked themselves, why are the devs still working with these shots? The ingame shots are great at this time, so there is no need to publish these shots.

DIRT 2 and GRID are amazing looking games, so why not publish ingame shots? That goes for all bullshots btw

@13: Quite simply because the game isn’t really at a stage yet where we can put out in-game screenshots. It’s due for release in 2011 so there is still plenty of work to be done visually on the game.

If we did put out screens at this point the comments would no doubt be along the lines of “meh, looks awful compared to (insert other game here due out in a month or so or already released)” :)

Like I said the visuals are more intended to illustrate the inclusion of the new cars, weather effects, locations, game modes etc. Something that is a lot easier to highlight with images accompanying words, than just words alone. For example explaining Gymkhana to someone is a lot simpler and easier if you have an associated image to accompany what you are saying.

This isn’t to say though that the final game won’t look close to these images, the visuals for DiRT 2 got pretty close to the target visuals we initially released imo.

Rest assured though that when the game is ready to be shown off with in-game screens, we won’t be releasing any more of these target visuals. Like you said, what is the point.

Wich brings up another question: why are the target screenshots and movies always far beyond what is reasonably possible on the hardware?

You know before hand the game is not able to look this good. Why not create more realistic mock ups?

The infamouse Killzone video had the exuse of not knowing what the PS3 could possibly do, so they made a geuse.
    What’s Dirt3′s exuse?

@ Helios: Thanks for your answer!
I’m looking very forward to the game and hope it has a real ‘Rally’ feel to it…just like the good old CMR games :)

Best of luck to you all!

@15 Why so anal? It’s basically concept art. Would you rather they aim low when it comes to imagining a game?

Personally I don’t think you can aim high enough.

Excuse? Really? According to Helios they made it clear from the beginning that it was makebelief, not actual shots. It’s not exactly their fault if the article doesn’t reflect that.

Look at how well Bioware did for releasing (seemingly) undoctored pre-alpha shots of Dragon Age 2. No one should be that stupid in marketing their games.

@16 – No problem always nice to clarify these things, and thanks for the kind words of support! :)

With regards the rallying, there is plenty more of that in DiRT 3 over DiRT 2.
