The sizes of FFXIII’s 360 HD installed have been reported. Get the lot after the break.
Installation is totally optional, remember.
The total, disc-by-disc break-down is:
- Disc 1 – 5.9Gb
- Disc 2 – 5.8Gb
- Disc 3 – 6.6Gb
The game’s released on March 9.
Thanks, Ve3tro.

And, of course, you don’t need to install all three discs at the same time.
Or any of them. At all. Why is this a story again?

And if it’s linear and you don’t have to swap disks once you’re done with them, you could just delete the install of the previous disk.
*OPTIONAL*

I’d be very surprised if anyone’s eyes *actually* popped upon discovering this. VERY surprised.

It wasn’t actually a serious complaint.
Incidentally, how does the overall file size compare with the PS3 version? Anyone remember how big that was?

Review embargo lifts on the 5th of March, eh? Interesting.

@Blerk:
I guess the story here is that on the x360 the total size of the game (assuming no assets are being duplicated on each disc, which is silly of course) is 18.3Gb.
This number will then be compared with the size of PS3′s Blu Ray disc, just to make some more (silly) assumptions on which version is *bigger* thus *better*.
All’s fair in love and war, as they say – even silly assumptions.
Edit: Heck, you made another comment as I was typing this…

Digital Foundry sorted out the stats. The Japan-o-version was 39.4GB, (and I quote) “32.6GB of which appear to be pre-rendered movies”.

I laughed at the comments this received on N4G. xD

Same here.
Can someone clarify what Disc installation on the 360 does?
Does it allow you to run the game without the disc?
If so, there was one good comment on N4G along the lines of why hasn’t the full disc content been used on each disc?
A DvD can hold what? 7 or 9gb?
But each of these installs is around the 6gb mark.
Why hasn’t that extra space been used for anything?

you have to still use the disc it only puts certain things on the hd. basically the console runs smoother, like with lost odyssey if its not installed the 360 sounds really loud. however installed its really quiet.

Disc installation basically makes an image of the disc so that you can run the game from the hard drive (although you do still need the disc in the tray for piracy checks).
The ‘full disc size’ hasn’t been used because 360 DVDs can only contain 6.8gb of data. Whether that’s just down to the disc format or because the rest is ‘reserved’ for other stuff like firmware updates, etc, I dunno.

Eregol, installation on the x360 copies all the contents of the DVD on the hard disc, creating a disc image. The console then, will use this image to play the game instead of the actual DVD. However the actual DVD must *still* be in the drive.
The benefits are less noise (some of the 16x DVD-ROM units on the x360 are rather noisy), quicker loading times and less wear on the discs.
As for the size, the special DVD format of the x360 is around the 6Gb mark and some of the extra space is used for the disc to be recognized by other DVD players as an x360 disc and a relevant warning to be displayed.
EDIT: Or what Blerk and darkmark1987 said; damn you work, damn you

Blerk is right. Square hasn’t utilised 1GB of available space on disc one and disc two.
It’s not looking very good is it?

Given that practically 80% of the game data is in pre-rendered movies the final file sizes for the discs were probably determined by how best they could encode those movies for maximum quality within the disc space that they had. Given that they wouldn’t want one movie to be better quality than another that would probably mean that they’d encode everything with the same quality settings, hence it’s very unlikely that you’re ever going to be able to fill each disc completely.

It’s good thing 360 has optional installs for quicker loadings and less noise. On the ps3 it doesn’t install this game at all and it loads quickly. Was about time some developers put the mandatory installs aside.Uncharted 2,FFXIII and GoW III.Some developers really try their best…others don’t

My main problem with multiple disks are the installs.
I hate the noise my 360 makes so I need to install each game I play… and with a 20gb hdd that’s not easy.
Having to swap between two disks in ME2 was hard enough.
