Rare: “No shortage of possibilities” in bringing other IP to XBLA

Rare boss Mark Betteridge has told CVG that the release of Perfect Dark is just the beginning of what the studio could bring to Xbox Live Arcade: something that has “no shortages of possibilities.”

We know there are a lot of people looking forward to that. There’s nothing to announce yet after Perfect Dark, but we’ve got over 25 years of IP to dip into so there’s no shortage of possibilities,” revealed Betteridge.

He also revealed the remake of the N64 classic is getting its final polish now from Dundee studio 4J Studios.

Perfect Dark will be arriving on Xbox Live Arcade in the next few months, polished up by 4J Studios with improved textures, framerate, Leaderboards and Achievements, and of course online multiplayer.”

The shooter looks set to get a release anytime between next week and the first week of next month.

Previously, Rare has released two Banjo-Kazooie games on the service.

Now kids, after PD, get that petition for Killer Instinct to be on XBLA ready.

I have heard only good things about this game.
I will certainly buy this one.

Am I wrong in reading this article as Rare saying

‘Remember when we made good games? Wouldn’t it be great if we could make money off re selling them to you with partially updated graphics?’

Perhaps I’m too cynical, but why don’t they focus on making new IPs instead of rebooting/remaking and ruining their games from two generations ago?!

Woa, Rare really has no more talent. They are just rehashing stuff from their archives…how sad. I really hope they don’t get Goldeneye…

And once again, Karma STRIKES!! Hope they’re happy with MS!

If I am not mistaken, most of the people that made them them, back then are now gone. Really MS bought an empty shell of a studio. That of course is why they didn’t just buy out Bungie.

And yes Rare is in a sad state right now.

Hmm? Microsoft did buy out Bungie.

As for Rare, I bet it’s full of talent. Maybe not the original talent, but talent all the same.

MS doesn’t out right own/control Bungie.

They use to, Bungie went from Take-Two to being owned by Microsoft then just after H3 came out they split from them and because independent.

Not any more, no, but they did. Microsoft acquired them in 2000 and then they split — amicably, as far as I know — at the end of 2007.

Of course Microsoft got the kids (Halo).

Microsoft still holds a stake in Bungie but not a majority one.

I think MS still have publishing rights to any games Bungie make which makes them instantly 360 and PC only.

I sincerely doubt that is the case Geki, tbh.

It’s rumoured that Microsoft have first refusal rights on Bungie’s next game — i.e. if they want it they get it, no questions — but even if that’s true it doesn’t necessarily make the game a 360/PC exclusive as MS might decide to pass the opportunity up.

None of which has anything to do with Rare.

Microsoft own the rights to Halo, but if Bungie wanted to make a multiplatform new IP i’m sure they have the freedom to do so.

NEW Blast Corps, is the way forwards.
Natal it up all you want, it’ll still be a winner, and should see support from new and old(er) fans alike.
