PS3 Slim Vs PS3 Fat install – Slim wins

ps3slim5

DF’s posted up a movie comparing PS3 Slim’s install speed compared with the old SKU. It’s 25 percent faster.

The install’s the amazing 20-minute DMC4 load, so it’s easy to see how much faster it is. Good stuff.

  1. Phoenixblight said:

3 mins faster oooh thats uber elite *rolls eyes*

  2. SticKboy said:

I can’t believe that this isn’t a bigger deal to most people – the install times are chiefly what prevents me from buying a PS3. If I wanted the hassle of long set-ups, I’d have carried on gaming on a PC.

  3. pleasant_cabbage said:

I don’t mind installs that much, it’s more the firmware updates and game patches that seem to take forever compared to, well… something else.

Old? I know, just had to go through it again last night and it really does take the pee.

  4. Psychotext said:

Oddly enough I’ve seen other tests that have them at virtually identical install speeds.

  5. Blerk said:

I wonder if some of the new machines have slightly faster hard drives than others? I’m surmising the Blu-Ray drives are going to be identical in all models.

  6. rrod360lol said:

@StickBoy Because usually if a game’s got any ps3 install it’s technically poor.

I tend to avoid any ps3 games with any install.

  7. SticKboy said:

What, like BioShock? You’d have a hard time convincing me that it’s poor, technically or otherwise. I bought that for my brother’s birthday and it was between 20 and 30 mins between booting up the PS3 and actually getting to play the game. Unbelievable!

I just don’t understand how PS3 owners put up with that crap. I’m holding off on a PS3 Slim until they bundle it with the wands, methinks.

  8. Gekidami said:

I’m surprised your keyboard still works Stickboy, what with it being drenched in your whiny tears and all.

  9. Psychotext said:

    “your whinny tears”

Are those the tears a horse makes?

  10. SticKboy said:

I’m not whinnying at all – how could I be if I don’t (yet) own a PS3? I’m supremely happy with my X360, even if it is a bit loud.

Sounds to me like you’ve got buyers remorse there, young jimmy-fella-me-laddio.

  11. Gekidami said:

How could you know how crap the PS3 is -as you so love to state in many of your comments- if you dont own one? Yet another 360 fanboy who claims to know all yet knows nothing.

  12. Phoenixblight said:

It doesn’t bother me. I guess it would if I had time constraints but usually when I get a game that day I am free or I call in to work (if its a game I have been waiting for more than a few years ie FF, Mass Effect) Metal Gear was a good 20 mins but I made some lunch switched to Cable and switched back. THings like this don’t make it or break it for me. MGS was by far one of the best games I have ever played, Batman was another with Install I also loved that game.

  13. SticKboy said:

Because, Gekidami, I have friends, several of whom have PS3s on which I play frequently. So does my brother, as I mentioned above. However, given the behaviour you just displayed it’s entirely possible you find the concept of friends entirely alien.

@ Phoenix – but it’s not just the installs that gets me. It’s all the little updates that get in the way. When you have friends round, you don’t want to wait over 20 mins to update KillZone 2 just because you haven’t played it in a few months.

  14. Psychotext said:

The installs on MGS were terrible. I wouldn’t have minded doing it all at once (could have just left it) but having to do it every chapter was just shit… especially when I was doing my next play throughs.

  15. Phoenixblight said:

@13 The same goes for Xbox they occasional patch games especially if you haven’t touched it. ANd your friends and can wait a few minutes. Patience is a good thing otherwise you will lose a lot of opportunities because you couldn’t wait.

@ Psycho I totally forgot about the installs every chapter those were a pain. But again we gamers should be taking breaks I know when I get into a game I forget to eat, sleep, and wait to bio until the point of excrutionating pain =-P Not saying the installs are not annoyances but they aren’t a deal breaker atleast imo.

  16. Psychotext said:

@PB: The xbox installs take seconds. It’s part of their oh so smart patching system. The only time they don’t is when it’s something like an expansion on Burnout Paradise.

  17. SticKboy said:

Hmmm.. but that’s the thing. Mandatory installs for the X360 only take a minute or less – even the NXE took under five minutes to download and install! If you want to install a game that’s a good 10 minutes or so, but it’s entirely optional.

I didn’t even know console game patches could take so long to deal with until I started playing on PS3s more and more – when it’s not something you usually have to put up with, it genuinely becomes that much more irksome.

But I guess it boils down to what I expect from a console. In my head, I’m still used to inserting a NES or Mega Drive cartridge, flipping a switch and playing the game right away. Anything that takes me *too* far away from that level of immediacy really is a deal breaker, as far as I’m concerned.

  18. Retroid said:

I’ve been reasonably lucky with installs on the PS3. Mostly.

/Flashbacks to the hour-or-so it took Gran Turismo 5 Prologue to install / update

    /Curls into a ball

  19. Phoenixblight said:

Well I would certainly hope Xbox would take seconds to installs afterall they have had their own OS for how many years and experienced programmers I would be shocked if it took 10+ min installs. Sony are obviously not that experienced with it and I think they are capping the bandwidth on their servers thats why downloads for anything take FOREVER.

  20. reask said:

Man that’s mad, I never knew updates even took that long.

  21. Galactic_Barret said:

Were the installs for MGS really that bad for people? I mean, I bought the game, knowing full well about how ‘long’ they would be, counted the minutes, and they were 10, 5, 3 and 2 minutes long for each chapter. I don’t know, maybe I’ve gained patience since becoming a father, but that doesn’t seem anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be. The way people seethe over these installs, its kind of O.D.

Edit: Now that I take the time to think about it, its most likely due to the anti-piracy security Sony has in place. Checking and re-checking the system for unsanctioned firmware and whatnot.

  22. Psychotext said:

When I’m gaming, I want to be gaming rather than sitting around waiting for installs. I don’t get enough time for it as it is.

As I said before, I wouldn’t have minded so much but having to do the installs a second time was really annoying.

  23. Galactic_Barret said:

Alright. I guess I’m just different.

Edit: Again, thinking about it, Snake smoking may have made the wait easier for me. It was so beautiful, I had to light one up for myself.

  24. Psychotext said:

Ha, I had to go and do the same. Gaming kills.

  25. Phoenixblight said:

I know it is superbly done. MGS was my first experience with the PS3 so I was spoiled in that and every game I get that installs I expect the same…too bad no one has gone to that level yet..

  26. jkoz said:

I’ve had a PS3 for almost three years. I’ve had no issues with updating games or installing data. Some people need instant gratification, but I can take ten minutes and have a sandwich or something. Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of my favorite games of all time, and the install time is a break from the game for me. I have a 360 (since launch, so longer than my PS3) and the contrast between the systems does not bother me in the slightest.

  27. SticKboy said:

@ jkoz – I take your point. But when I buy a new game, I want to play it immediately, not faff around due to a poorly designed OS or whatever the reason is. I’m just amazed that this flaw hasn’t drawn more flack from consumers.

  28. Mike said:

I would just like a choice: a) no install, long loading time, b) install, shorter loading time.

Then I’ve got nothing to moan about.

  29. SticKboy said:

…apart from whenever you have to install a patch or firmware update ;)

  30. G1GAHURTZ said:

Got mine yesterday. It’s currently hooked up with an HDMI cable from one of my Elite’s and it’s wired (360 cable again!) to my router, because I’m not sure how many wireless connections it supports. I’m already using two.

I had to go to Maplin today to get an optical switcher and another optical cable for the PS3, but only realised when I got back that I actually needed another one to join the two to my surround system, so I’ll have to go back again tomorrow.

I found the XMB functional, but nothing special. It lacks a lot of features that XBL has, and the PSN Store is a bit lightweight too. It seems a bit odd that there isn’t a section for demos and that everything seems to be bunched together…

I got CoD4 with it, because there aren’t any PS3 exclusives that I’m interested in, and I wanted to test the difference between PSN and XBL when it comes to my favourite online game. I have to say that XBL is much more stable so far. Of the games that I’ve had, probably most have been laggy, although I managed to get 3 good quality connection games in a row this morning.

I tried the KZ2 demo, but I didn’t like it. I understand what people are talking about now when they complain about too much recoil…

I almost had to choose another username as well, until I realised that the G1GAHURTZ that I registered way back in 2007 was still mine! I also found out that someone else has registered ‘G1GAHURTZ_PS3′, believe it or not.

Overall, I’m quite pleased with it. I don’t really intend on buying any games for it that I can get for my 360, because I still like collecting gamerpoints, so it should be an exclusive games only console for me, but as long as Sony keep churning them out, I should have plenty to choose from.

  31. Phoenixblight said:

SO you want to keep getting 360 games for Multiplatform games just for the Gamerpoints? So you can elongate your Epeen? *shakes head*

  32. G1GAHURTZ said:

Yeah, I like gamerpoints. Simple as.

  33. Phoenixblight said:

Ps3 has Trophies they are both pointless just a thing a you wave in front of people (epeen)

“Oh you got 5ooo points well I got 10 million” I find it absolutely pointless then again I am not a competive person.

  34. Gekidami said:

Dont lie Giga, you got CoD4 to play with TEA :p

  35. G1GAHURTZ said:

Yeah, alright Phoenix, you think they’re a waste of time. You’re perfectly entitled to that opinion, but I don’t share it.

lol Geki, we haven’t played yet, but we will soon, I’m sure…

  36. theevilaires said:

ok take what G1GA said and apply it to me the 360 ver, but i will give you a deeper in-depth no holds barred truth about which is better. stay tuned people because heads are gonna pop :D

  37. theevilaires said:

oh and G1GA you might want to lvl up to get your P90 asap cause without it you’re a fish out of water buddy :P

  38. G1GAHURTZ said:

    LOL

Yeah, I’m missing it at the moment, but the mp5 is good enough to get me up to level 40…

I must be making people feel pretty useless, cos they keep getting beaten by ’some newb with a low rank’. lol!

  39. Galactic_Barret said:

I can’t believe I just read that installing patches and firmware updates, things that enhance and stabilize your games of all things, should have more outrage associated with it.

I swear, I’ve downloaded 3 FW updates in total since obtaining my PS3. Which have taken 10 mins to DL/UD each. Really, this is getting a little rediculous now.

  40. SticKboy said:

“I can’t believe I just read that installing patches and firmware updates, things that enhance and stabilize your games of all things, should have more outrage associated with it.”

It’s only outrageous (IMHO) because of the huge quality difference in the way this beneficial feature is handled between the two rival platforms. Nobody’s saying that patches and updates aren’t a good thing (they clearly are), I’m just surprised that nobody makes a bigger deal out of the PS3’s comparatively poor implementation of a feature that’s so unobtrusive on X360.

  41. Phoenixblight said:

Shouldn’t be a big deal We have had what 2 updates this year? Thats something to really bitch about thats what maybe an hour out of your life….

  42. SticKboy said:

But that’s not exactly right, is it? there may have been only a couple of firmware updates, but plenty more patches and mandatory installs. From my own personal experience this year, these have negatively impacted play sessions on a PS3 far, far more than on X360. I’m surprised Xbox’s marketeers haven’t done more to highlight this disparity.

  43. pleasant_cabbage said:

I’ll agree with Stickboy and say that the total amount of downtime waiting for the ps3 to get ready to let you play (firmware, patches, mandatory installs) totally dwarves that on the 360 and is a noticeable pain in the hole. Maybe if you only have one or two games it isn’t an issue but for some it is.

No fanboyism, just the comments from someone who has maybe 10 times in the last year saw an anticipated hour long session reduced to almost nothing.

  44. Phoenixblight said:

I have 7 games so far for the PS3 if I were to round the number of installs, patches, firmware update would be maybe 4-5 hours I just got it in February. 5 hours whoopidy do da. Cry me a river. If it took an entire freaking day that would be something to bitch about but this is not a deal breaker its not something for Microsoft to wave at especially since they have RROD out the wazoo. They both can mud sling at each other all day. Something like this is very minute.

  45. SticKboy said:

But that’s the thing – Microsoft was quite rightly hauled over the coals for RRoD, which has been comprehensively fixed with the release of the X360 Jasper chip-set, so new customers need never worry.

Sony’s “local downtime” problem is an ongoing matter that affects each and every PS3 user, new and old alike. This knowledge has definitely affected my purchasing decision – I’m surprised Microsoft haven’t exploited it as I bet I’m not the only one who’d want to avoid this.

  46. Phoenixblight said:

Local Downtime? I dunno maybe I haven’t been on when this “downtime” happens but I have never seen it except when the last patch went Live. You have to figure also PSN is free where XBL you have to pay for( if want to get into the fun stuff) That subscription goes to maintenance of those servers. Probably why Sony obviously caps the bandwidth of their servers so we can’t download at higher speed of Xbox live. I don’t see these small things as a huge problem hell I have had the 360 since launch then got a RROD with that and bought an Elite (Still had one RROD) but once I got my PS3 I have not touched that system since Fallout 3.

  47. Gekidami said:

As far as online service downtimes go XBL beats PSN hands down this year (and possibly since the begining of this gen).

Dont really understand how anyone could complain about patches, or as they’re also known as DEVS SUPPORTING THEIR GAMES AFTER RELEASE.

  48. SticKboy said:

@ Gekidami: Please see post # 40 & 42 regarding your comment – I’m not complaining about patches (far from it), just surprised in the quality disparity in implementation between X360 and PS3, plus how its not really been highlighted to the public. I’m amazed it hasn’t annoyed more people, but then I suppose you only really notice the difference if you have extensive experience with both consoles.

@ Phoenix: By “local downtime”, I actually meant a catch-all phrase for all install issues relating to firmware updates, game patches and mandatory installs plaguing the PS3. I didn’t actually mean server downtime, and in my experience that’s a much or little an issue on both platforms equally.

  49. DrDamn said:

    @SticKBoy
MS have a very (exceptionally) low limit on the size of game patches, hence they are always very quick.. The flip side is that they are limited in what they can do with a “patch” in terms of adding new features – but the speed is great. There is also a bizarre limit on the number of these patches you can have on your system. So if you regularly cycle through more games which have patches than the limit then you will be reapplying them all the time. Not a big deal as they download so quickly.

It’s a great example of the sort of thing which MS thought through and had designed into the system from the start.
