Dragon Quest IX – “Definitive decision” not yet made on western launch

Square told VG247 today that a final decision on launching Dragon Quest IX outside Japan is yet to be made.

“DQIX is currently being considered for release outside of Japan,” said the company by email.

“When a definitive decision is made about the release we will make an official statement.”

It first came to light that the publisher was only “considering” releasing the game in the US and Europe yesterday.

The DS RPG’s now shipped more than 3.5 million units in Japan.

Bizarre. DQVIII sold really well in the West – even in Europe.

Blerk, I seriously doubt it won’t be released at all in the West. Maybe it’s just a question on “when”.

After all, who would not want to capitalize on a “3.5 millions units sold” game? Unless they consider the expenses of localizing it a barrier, of course…

I just find it odd that they’d even hesitate. I wonder if it has anything to do with it being a DS game? Is it a particularly big cart, more expensive to produce? And DS games generally don’t do nearly as well in the West.

You are right, it is odd. Who knows? It’s their loss if they don’t bring it to the West, that’s for sure.

If square-enix were smart, they’d release a FF7 remake for the ps3. That would net them tons of money.
