SCEA responds to Kotick’s PS3 “support” comments

ps31b

SCEA has responded to ActiBlzz’s threats to stop supporting the company’s hardware if it does not cut the price on PS3.

“PlayStation has tremendous momentum coming out of E3, and we are seeing positive growth with more than 350 titles slated to hit across all our platforms, including many anticipated games from our publishing partners,” said a SCEA rep in an official statement.

“We enjoy healthy business relationships with and greatly value our publishing partners and are working closely with them to deliver the best entertainment experience.”

Earlier today, a representative from SCEE stated that while the company “respects our third-parties’ opinions”, it would refuse to comment any further on the statement.

A price drop is coming, and of course they don’t want you to know about it. They practically said it themselves. Sony says they predict sales increase by double next year. They also say they’ve lost a billion this year. But the thing that has me assuming they are going to do a price drop soon, is the fact that they think that they will lose another billion next year. How do you lose the same amount year to year if you plan on doubling your sales?

  5. MushroomStamp said:

When your sales aren’t that great, it’s easy to double. Sony continues to struggle to prove that the PS3 is the console of choice for gamers. Unfortunately, the numbers speak for themselves and gamers disagree. How’s last place going Sony?

    @MushroomStamp
With thePS3, PS2 and PSP i think Sony is ok and the gamers dont disagree at all….

    Oooo!

That looks like a thinly veiled ‘Activision are just a small fish in the big sea of our business relationships’ to me…

I don’t see any ps3 price cut until March 2010. Sony has a policy during this time of tight credit to make a profit from the system itself. Hence there will be no price drop until it costs Sony less than $300 to make the ps3.

  9. MushroomStamp said:

Come on .. I am talking about CURRENT generation .. handhelds and Old ass PS2 dont’ fall into that. Hardcore gaming isn’t done on handhelds. The numbers don’t lie, the PS3 is not and has not been doing that great. I personally blame the gaming library and Sony lack of real developer support. The one thing MS did that was uber smart was make a platform that developers could easily use. This is much like back when PS1 and Saturn were competing. This is nothing new, just the facts. Developers come out all the time saying they aren’t a fan of developing for the PS3.

i wanted a better sony response than no fucking comment that scee always do, seriously i wish scee would get replaced, especially the marketing, psn store and localisation, and pr departments. but i was hoping for a more ‘fuck off bobby’ response.

mushroom head when M$ pulls a 125 million lead then talk shit. As for games that launch with the xbx360 they were all shit, until oblivion came along followed up by dead rising.

It has nothing to with being harder to develop for. Infinity Ward proved that same with the burnout guys. Its all about price. If ps3 would have launched at $400 like the xbox360 this article would have never existed.

  12. theevilaires said:

Sony doesn’t give a shit about activison. all they would have done if activision dropped support is team up with EA to create a sony/EA co-op division to produce ps3 exclusives. who the fuck does kotick think he’s kidding.

Rockband is better than GH any day of the week.
Tony Hawk is a joke now with that stupid board.
    Treyarch is shit enough said.
Infamous shits on any of the spider-man games to date.

who is he kidding? this guy must have just found out his new 23 year old wife was fucking the pool boy and now she wants a divorce and half of his money LOL.

I think you misspelt insanity there. Don’t feel bad about it though.

Sony couldn’t afford to keep FFXIII and GTA IV exclusive. You think they could afford to buy out a huge chunk of EA?

  16. MushroomStamp said:

Whatever Fanboy! It’s not just about the price. Look at the attach rates to prove that one. I’m talking FACTS, which you just want to ignore because your a Fanboy. I have both systems, and it absolutely has to do with the Games. Well, and the small cramped PS3 controller for me. Sony has only made 2 exclusive games on the PS3 that I feel are worth the money, Infamous and Uncharted. 99% of multiplatform games are better on the 360. Developers from DAY ONE have said they don’t care for programming on the PS3.It takes more time and money, with very little advantage/payoff. DEAL WITH IT FANBOY!

    Arrrghhh… scary post is scary!

where did i say buy out. again i think its time for you to retire. stop trying to be that old guy in the miami night clubs.

oh and to mushroom head, i forgot a lot of kids are graduating this week and losers like you will go back home to your parents basement and make a career trying to be an internet star,(its working good for that kid that left school to play GH :P ) but the fact you just mentioned something about the ps3 controller just labeled you a fanboy there.

You want to know why people aren’t buying more games on the ps3. Its because they can rent them, do you understand that many people have lost their jobs this past year. Another possibility could be that the PS3 is great for a lot of other things than just playing games that many people enjoy.

I personally understand if someone wanted to rent a game they know is short and just want the trophies (Eat Lead anyone). A lot goes into the factor of the attach rates. It has nothing to do with people not interested in a PS3.

You make it sound like every 360 owner has a ps3 and there’s only 7 million people out their with ps3 only. i don’t think so. the ps2 was harder to develop for than the xbox1 but that didn’t stop devs did it…yea pick up your face now and deal with real facts.

Whatver FANBOY!! If you read my bio you would see I’m 40 and have been gaming since 77. You are a judgemental FANBOY mind like usual, doesn’t know what it’s talking about. You just spew hatred for systems against your Fanboy System. Commenting on the controller doens’t mean fanboy, it just says that I’m bigger than a child and need a controller that fits my hands. Go play your garbage and convince yourself your playing the best version, cuz your not.

    3 things

i’m sure hes one of garrat’s little trolls seraphemz. the fact of the matter is he lost all face when he admitted he didn’t like the dualshock.

explain to me what have you played great games like Ico, shadow of the colossus, god of war, tekken 1,2,3,4 and 5,gran turismo, onimusha series, mgs 3 and 4,ff 7,8,9,10,12, syphon filter 1,2,3,jak 1,2,3, ratchet 1,2,3, sly cooper 1,2,3, resident evil games, and many other great franchises that started on PLAYSTATION first with.

oh a dualshock. if you hate it so much why did you put up with it for the past 10 years. and don’t pull a blackdreamhunk on us and say you were playing pc games

    fucking loser :P

  24. NiceFellow said:

It’s posturing and political maneuvering. You do it when your stock is high and others is lower.

One, despite all the flawed ‘margin’ arguments I see kicking around, Activision is not in a position where millions of profitable unit sales can simply be ‘thrown away’. Even is each MW2 sale on PS3 is a little less profitable than a 360 unit you don’t simply throw away that volume of nonetheless profitable sales.

If margin was the only factor then every company in the world would be tiny, focusing on very high margin sales of a very small number of very efficiently made/sold units. But guess what, marketshare, volume sales, etc. are part of the story too and most companies are actually trying to become profitably larger (i.e. sell more while remaining nicely profitable).

Activision needs volume sales as much as margin – its unprofitable sales that would be an issue, something that MW2 on PS3 isn’t going to be.

Then there’s public perception. Everyone’s expecting MW2 to break records. With the PS3 is sure won’t be. GH would also take a nasty knock in performance. You think IW would be happy losing the PS3 platform? Just add up global CoD4 and COD:WaW sales to get an easy answer to that one.

He wants more PS3s in the market, not less, and he’s using Activision’s recent performance to try and put external pressure on Sony to suit his desires vs their own.

He may also want to foster a public perception to aid future royalty discussions, etc.

His comments aren’t even accurate – as attach rate on PS3 has been steadily rising and many multiplatform titles sell fairly equally (globally that is, not regionally) these days by all accounts.

Going by accepted logic its the 360 that would see attach rate dips first as eventually, if you really score big with install base, your attach rate actually suffers.

So unless Activision really want to literally lose millions of dollars of profitable revenue he won’t follow through on this threat.

@theevilaires – How is it your a fanboy if you don’t like the Dualshock?
I’ve owned a PS1, PS2, and never was a fan of the controller. It IS cramped compared to the 360 controller for many people, I’m one of them.
I don’t hate the PS3 either……. When they drop the price to being reasonable, I’m getting one. I want to play the last guardian, Infamous, and Uncharted-Uncharted 2.
I just don’t like the controller as much as the 360’s. I prefered the Dreamcast’s controller over the PS1-PS2 controller too.

  26. theevilaires said:

@ fearmonkey: why in the hell would you play with cramped hands for 10 years of gaming. things like that causes serious health problems later in life.

Also when some jumps out and say the reason xbox360 is better than ps3 is because of the controller they are just being a plain stupid fanboy. I’ve beenusing the dualshock for over 10 years and across 3 generation platforms. Theres o way in the hell I’m just going to hold a 360 controller and say yup 360 is better than ps3. no way.

As for games xbots keep talking about, exclusives?!! what exclusives?!! Bullet witch, vampire rain, Too human, are you serious? These games along with the 360 controller made you make the switch?!! LMAO then you deserve your 360 and the RROD every 4 months

  27. Psychotext said:

“As for games xbots keep talking about, exclusives?!! what exclusives?!! Bullet witch, vampire rain, Too human, are you serious? ”

Don’t be a tard TEA. Especially given one of those titles is on the PS3 too…

  28. fearmonkey said:

I never said it was intolerable, It just gets uncomfortable when trying to use the bumpers. Even on the 360, the bumpers are a little cramped for my taste.
I was one of the few that actually like the original “Duke” Xbox controller though lol.

That last statement though just makes you look like a Sony fanboi. I know you love Sony, but cmon, you can do better than that.
We all know none of those games were the reason to buy a 360, thats like said Xbots mentioning LAIR.
Both consoles have some great games, and some crap ones, it just depends on what you like. I’m an RPG fan (not so much a JPRPG fan), and frankly the 360 is better for that right now. If Sony was the better platform for RPG’s, I would have owned a PS3 long ago.

  29. fearmonkey said:

I should also mention I never “switched”. I tend to buy all the consoles, and buy the titles I want, and rent most of the others. I own the PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, Xbox, Xbox 360, plus alot of the older systems over time. I still have a 3DO, and a saturn too lol.
I bought a 360 as it was first available, and haven’t been sorry about it. I also disagree that the launch games were terrible, I really liked Kameo, perfect dark zero wasnt great, but wasnt horrible.

  30. theevilaires said:

that last one bit from me was a joke, but sony fans never screamed for vampire rain, lair was not a bad game either.

my original statement was directed only to the M$ sponsored troll who used key words that would paint him as a xbot.

psycho you were right and fearmonkey you bought a good argument.

But sticking to the article topic fuck Kotick if he thinks dropping support for ps3 won’t hurt Activison.

  31. fearmonkey said:

I’m with you on Kotick, can’t stand the guy.
Any income is income, if the bottom line still shows a profit, cutting support would be stupid.
It’s all posturing, he thinks he is something special, he has delusions of grandeur.
Let him cut support, his shareholders would revolt, and he would eventually be ousted.
