Nintendo: Wii to rise up to £20 for UK trade [Update]

wiia1

Update: Nintendo’s just made a further statement on this, saying it hopes consumers “understand” the hike is due to reasons outside of the company’s control.

Thanks to the depreciation of the pound, Nintendo’s said it’s to raise the price it charges the UK trade for Wii hardware by £18-20.

The machine has a recommended retail price of £180.

“We are only – reluctantly – raising our trade price now to retailers due to unprecedented and sustained depreciation of the pound,” Nintendo told VG247 in a statement today.

“This is a problem brought about by extreme currency fluctuations that are a symptom of the global economic situation.”

This should be funny.

Strange that someone is announcing a price rise rather than a cut.

Has the world gone mad?

Eregol, has this generation taught you nothing?

Expect the fucking weirdest shit you can, and it’ll happen.

At least inadvertantly the PS3 has got a price drop, right?

It’s reverse psychology!

I wonder if MS and Sony will follow suit…

No it’s fucking not…. There’s nothing as logical as psychology involved.

So the Wii will be more expensive than the 360 Elite if this is passed through to consumers, blimey!

Nintendo doesn’t give a shit. Sony on the other hand are probably pulling out all the stops to make sure they don’t have to do the same.

@Pud: Yes there is. Expensive is good. Who would want to buy a cheap console like the 360 now, which is also supposed to break a lot.

Maybe I am fuckign screwed up, but for some insane reason I think I’d prefer a 360 over an infinitely more expensive and shit Wii.

And you know what, I think any insane person would agree.

Nintendo likes money, a lot. They’ve been rinsing people for the Wii since it’s been out. I dread to think how much pure profit they make on each unit sold.

I heard £6, which is a lot.

Nintendo’s trade prices are higher than everyone else’s too, so retailers already make far less profit on Nintendo kit than on (say) Xbox kit.
