SCEA management decision delayed Killzone 2

Posting on the official US PlayStation boards, SCEA’s Ron Eagle has confirmed that Killzone 2 was pushed back into February next year because of PS3 shooter overload this Christmas.

“Just wanted to add a quick reply on the ‘delay’ of Killzone 2 to Feb 2009,” he said.

“To be clear, there is nothing wrong or causing a delay to the development of the title. We (SCEA) had to look at the fall calendar with SOCOM, LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Resistance 2, plus some PSN titles and make a decision where each game should come out. Killzone 2 was moved to Feb 2009 to make sure we didn’t have three shooters in the marketplace competing for retail dollars during the same holiday season. The game will be great and it will be out in Feb 2009 in both Europe and North America.”

There’s still a lot of uncertainty regarding KZ2. I agree it would be daft to launch Socom, Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 within a month of each other, and Resistance 2 is simply the safer bet for a solid FPS shooter.

What I’ve seen of Killzone 2 looks excellent, and I’m sure it will become the first big title of 2009.

I can actually believe that they would bump it over SOCOM and Resistance. If they all launch together, the great unwashed buy Killzone because of the hype. If they launch Killzone first and it’s ‘brilliant’, at least Resistance sales would suffer as a consequence. And if they launch Killzone first and it’s crap, PS3 Christmas sales would suffer as a consequence.
