Sony: backwards compatability is “important to us”
According to this, the latest issue of EGM carries an interview with Sony US’s SVP of marketing, in which he says, backward compatibility is “important to us”. In the same piece, PlayStation Network director Eric Lempell said that PS2 games may yet be offered over PSN for PS3: “We haven’t talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possibles.”
Backwards compatability was removed from PlayStation 3 last year.

I was wondering about this. They got half way there with software emulation. Now they could go the hole hog.

I do wonder if Sony will repent of their 40GB sins and offer some form of backwards compatible PS3 again in the future. After all, the costs of making PS2 bits has come down further and the PS3 is now cheaper to make, so surely there’s an argument for releasing a fully backwards compatible “premium” edition of the PS3 console at some point in the future?
