USgamer Community Question: What's a Major Series That You Consider to Be a Huge Blindspot for You?

We all have our video game blindspots. The big series that elude us for some weird reason—whether it's missing out on a console, a generation, or just letting something slip us by. I'm sure there's like one person in the world who has never played a Mario game or something.

For this week's Community Question, we have an obvious question as three massive releases in long-established franchises release next Friday (Super Mario Odyssey, Assassin's Creed: Origins, and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus). What's a major (or not major) video game series that's a huge blindspot for you? Let us know in the comments! You can find some of the USgamer team's answers below.

I actually feel pretty comfortable talking about everything, but one popular series that I do feel is a bit of a blindspot for me personally is The Witcher. The Witcher 3 is undoubtedly one of the most important games of this generation, and it's very much in my wheelhouse, but I've struggled to fully commit to really plowing through it and finish it. Maybe it's the combat, maybe it's the pacing, I'm not sure. But I can't seem to stick with it.

I want to finish it, though. I'm planning to pick up an Xbox One X, so I'll be able to play Witcher 3 in glorious 4K pretty soon. Maybe that will be the motivation I need to finally knock out one of the few triple-A games from this generation that I would really call essential.

Oh, I should pick up Monster Hunter, too. It might help to know a bit more about that series.

Oh gosh. There are so many. Halo. Tetris. (Just kidding.) Megaman. Metal Gear. (I've at least played some of MGS 2.) Mass Effect. Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. (That counts as a series right?)

I think one that I've been wanting to check out for awhile, especially being a huge fan of JRPGs, is The Legend of Heroes series. Specifically the Trails of Cold Steel games. I've always loved the Persona series, and have always heard the Cold Steel games are at least kinda (emphasis on the kinda) similar—at least in terms of relationship building. My favorite JRPGs are the ones that give me time to bond with my virtual friends and genuinely care for them. Trails of Cold Steel seems to be all about that, with an intriguing overarching story too.

Hopefully one day I'll get the time for them. In the meantime, my Metal Gear Solid 2 save is still lingering on the Vamp boss that I ran into without any Rations like a sucker. I have the Master Chief Collection in my Xbox One right now. So trust me y'all: I'm making an effort. Kind of. One day I'll clear my backlog of blindspots.

For the last several years I have been chipping away at the Metal Gear Solid series, only to have stopped partway through Metal Gear Solid 2.

There are several reasons why I haven't run through one of the most beloved franchises in video games. First, I'm pretty bad at stealth games, so I often find myself spending more time hiding from the alerted guards than actually progressing through the game. Secondly, I started my run of the Metal Gear Solid games when the HD collection arrived on the PlayStation 3. Unfortunately, during the years it took me to beat the first Metal Gear Solid, and work my way through maybe a quarter of Metal Gear Solid 2, the PS4 came out.

So I ditched my PS3 at my family's house and with it my incomplete playthrough of the Metal Gear Solid series. I have Ground Zeroes and MGS V on my PS4, but not having finished any of the previous games in the series I don't really see the point of playing either of those. Maybe one day I'll figure out what the big deal is with Solid Snake, but until then I count Hideo Kojima's spy series as my largest video game blind spot.
