Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare to feature both dogfighting and on-rails sections

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will be the first game in the franchise to feature space combat. That's because the game's campaign will be set in the future, and you're going to be fighting on Earth as well as outer space.

We've already seen the game's futuristic fighter jet, leading many to assume these sections will be on-rails only, similar to the way previous games in the series have done vehicle sections. According to Infinity Ward, however, that's not entirely true.

"You’ll engage in different kinds of air combat throughout the campaign," design director Jacob Minkoff told Forbes in an interview.

"There are open dogfighting arenas with full freedom of flight in all directions, where you will take part in battles against both capital ships and enemy fighters, as well as exciting on-rails attack runs."

The fighter is called the Jackal, and it's also what you'll be using to get to "optional missions", which makes it seem like the game's world will be bigger than that of other Call of Duty games.

The studio also talked a little bit about space combat for soldiers, and the gadgets you'll be using to move around zero-g environments.

"As a SCAR, a spec-ops soldier trained to fight in space, you have the use of a grapple and RCS thrusters on your suit," explained Minkoff. "These allow you to quickly cross open spaces and get cover. Once you find a good vantage point, you have mag-boots that allow you to lock onto surfaces no matter which way they are oriented."

These tools, some of which can be seen in the trailer, will, for example, let you grapple onto the ceiling above enemies to outflank them, but it's still a "quick frenetic" way of getting around.

There's more in the interview about the story of the game's campaign, the factions at war, and how it's not going to be sci-fi. You can read the rest at the link.

Infinite Warfare is due out November 4 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
