Classic Fallout games return from mysterious sabbatical

Fallout is back. Why did it go away? Where was it? Is it now available in a value-added three pack bundle with its two immediate successors? The answer to all of these questions* lies below.

Bethesda has announced the return of Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel to Steam after an absence of about six months.

These classic games - two CRPGs and a combat tactics affair - had been available on both GOG and Steam, but mysteriously vanished over the 2013 holiday season, presumably due to the ongoing legal confusion as to who actually owns the property (you may remember a wee spat between Bethesda and Interplay over the now cancelled Fallout Online, for example).

Whatever the franchise's legal status is elsewhere, Bethesda has been able to publish the three late 90's, early 200's games on Steam, where you can pick them up for $10 or at the bargain price of $20 for all three.

All three boast Steam Cloud saves, and both Fallout and Fallout 2 come with classic or higher resolution modes. There's no Mac support, and it's worth noting that Fallout Tactics will not run on Windows 8. More details are available on the Bethesda Blog.
