League of Legends - new players to receive a "static roster of free champions" for first few levels

League of Legends will be easier for new players to get into, thanks to a free batch of champions Riot Games will unlock in a future update.

According to patch notes included with today's update 4.1, a stable roster of free champions will be made available for new players.

"Our goal is to improve the way players learn to play League of Legends when they’re first starting out," said Chris Tom, head of player relations and communications. "These champions were picked because of how easy they can be learned and how enjoyable most new players find them.

"These changes will be turned on at a later date."

The patch notes state that players new to League of Legends will have a static roster of free champions for the first few levels; after which, they will use the normal Free to Play rotation.

Update 4.1 was released today, and its focus is on "refinement and tuning."
