September NPD: Sony “continues to redefine entertainment”
Sony’s pumped about its September PS3 sales in the US. So much so, in fact, that boss Jack Tretton has claimed the company is changing the shape of “entertainment” as a whole.
“We are in the midst of one of the most exciting times for PlayStation as we continue to redefine entertainment experiences for consumers, both at home and on the go,” Tretton said, pointing to the price drop for the Playstation 3 and the release of the PSPgo.
“We’ve made unprecedented strides in digital and mobile entertainment with the availability of PSPgo.”
He added: “The best part is that we’ve only just begun an onslaught of relentless, rich content hitting throughout the fiscal year, including Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, God of War III, MAG, and ModNation Racers.”
“Relentless” is a great word. Get all the rest of the NPD news here. Thanks, Kotaku.

Tretton: Risk-loving Sony seeing “sky-rocketing” PS3 sales thanks to Slim
SCEA’s Jack Tretton’s told Forbes that Sony’s PS3 Slim gamble has paid off, with the console revamp resulting in “sky-rocketing sales… We couldn’t be happier with the numbers we’re seeing.”
Tretton added that he sees Sony as a greater risk-taker than Nintendo.
“We don’t have unlimited money, we cater to a more mass market audience, we’re willing to take a little bit more risk than a competitor like Nintendo,” he added.

Tretton “couldn’t be happier” with recent PS3 sales figures
SCEA president Jack Tretton has revealed he “couldn’t be happier” with the recent sales figures the PlayStation 3 has recieved since introducing the price-cut and the PS3 Slim at GamesCom over a month ago.
“Skyrocketing sales, couldn’t be happier with the numbers that we’re seeing, and I think proof that there was tremendous consumer demand, they were just waiting for the price-point to come down.”
Tretton also talks about Micrsoft and Nintendo in the interview. On Microsoft?
“I love their money. I think they can afford to be more patient, we’re very profit driven, we’re interested in return on investment in a fairly short period of time. I think Microsoft is prepared to go at it from a very steep curve in terms of profitability.”
And on Nintendo:
“Nintendo is almost the polar opposite. They know what they do well and they stick to it. They deliver a casual, youth-oriented entertainment experience that’s very enjoyable after 20 years. And they make money, they print money. Their profitability is their key focus and features are nice but profitability is king and I think that is enviable.”

Tretton says PS3 shortages are “conceivable” thanks to price cut

SCEA boss Jack Tretton has reiterated last week’s news regarding sales of PS3 climbing 300 percent thanks to the price cut.
But because of the popularity, he thinks there may end up being a shortage for the console.
“We are up about 300 percent over where we were pre-price drop,” he told Reuters. “We are up significantly versus last year.
“If things continue at this pace, it is conceivable that there will be product shortages.”
Get ‘em while they’re hot then, we reckon.

FFXIV: Tretton didn’t say “launch timing” exclusive at E3, says Tanaka

The words “launch timing” were “cut out” of SCEA boss Jack Tretton’s FFXIV exclusivity announcement FFXIV at E3, producer Hiromichi Tanaka told VG247 at GamesCom today.
“During the press conference, the ‘launch timing’ words were cut out of the comments, so the launch timing is going to be exclusive to PlayStation 3 as a console,” said the developer.
“Of course, we have a Windows version as well in that launch timing,” he said, adding: “PS3 and Windows are going to be at the same time.”
Own an Xbox 360? Want to play FFXIV? Don’t despair.
“That doesn’t mean that we’re not going to have a 360 [version] in the future, but at the launch timing, yes, it’s going to be Windows and PS3 only,” said Tanaka.
It’s out next year.

Sony’s GC Press Event: Tretton on the PS3 Slim
SCEA president Jack Tretton has spoken out on the PS3 Slim and the PS3 price-cut in a video interview with the US PS Blog for the first time.
“We’re extremely pleased that we’ve been able to meet production efficiencies that have allowed us to pass on those savings onto consumers,” said Tretton.
“As you know, the original Playstation and the PlayStation 2, we announced revisions of the hardware in the third and fourth years, we’re very pleased that, short of it’s third birthday, the Playstation 3 has achieved tremendous milestones which have allowed us to bring out this new form factor and pass those savings onto consumers, giving them the opportunity to buy this state of the art gaming system at half the price it originally debuted at in October 2006.”
The video is after the jump. Both the price-cut and Slim were announced tonight after months of speculation.
Thanks, Wonderwall Web.
