Activision plans on more Hero titles in 2010

In probably the most obvious news of the day, Activision’s Guitar Hero CEO Dan Rosensweig has told MCV that the “next iterations” of Band Hero, DJ Hero and Guitar Hero are in the works.
Keep breathing. You don’t want to go into shock, there, kiddos.
“We’re working on our 2010 slate now,” he told the site. “You will probably see fewer SKUs from us, but the focus on making the best-selling, most fun to play, best-reviewed games will continue. Those are the things that are constant.
“[There will be] more DJ Hero, and the next iterations of Guitar and Band are on the way. But we will see how the market plays out. What you will see is the games will live longer and be more vibrant through DLC.”

Jay-Z got in on DJ Hero to “expand” hip hop
Jay-Z’s in DJ Hero for the good of hip hop. That’s right. Not because he would have been paid a metric fuckload of money to do almost no work.
“Immediately, of course, with the success of Guitar Hero, it piqued my interest,” the US legend told MTV.
“Then, you know, on top of that, it was something from the hip hop culture, so any time, you know, I can expand the genre and introduce it to new audiences and widen it. You know, the reach of what hip hop can do, you know, I’m interested in that. And then, you know, after playing the game, you really get the feeling, like you know, you can be Grand Master Flash.”
Sure. DJ Hero’s out in the US now. You’ll be able to buy it this side of the water on Friday.
Thanks, Kotaku.

First DJ Hero review goes live, gets a 9 from IGN UK
DJ Hero is out tomorrow in the US and Friday in the UK.
IGN UK has gone live with the first review for the game, giving the game a 9.3.
Here’s a snip:
Those quibbles aside though, we’re full of praise for FreeStyleGames’ sterling work on its inaugural franchise debut. DJ Hero is a beautifully structured experience that understands the rhythm-action genre thoroughly enough to appeal directly to progression-obsessed fans, yet knows how to juggle its goods to offer a music experience that’s never frustrating and wears its unpretentious accessibility with pride. Its perfectly-judged difficulty curve ensures there’s a richly rewarding sense of accomplishment as you hone your turntable skills and, even if you’re just looking for a quick spin, the quality of the game’s audio is compelling in itself. Hands-down, it’s the most exciting, refreshing music game we’ve played in ages and, whether on or off the decks, DJ Hero succeeds admirably in its goal to bring people together to party – and isn’t that what music’s all about?
This is only the start. Expect more reviews to go live soon.

Expect DJ Hero to have “slower” initial sales, says Huang
Guitar Hero co-founder Kai Huang, speaking recently on a panel at the PLAY Digital Media Conference in Berkeley, has said that Activision is not expecting DJ Hero to show blockbuster sales straight off the bat.
“We’re not expecting a typical videogame curve where you sell the majority of the units in the first month and then it decays quickly,” Huang said.
“We’re expecting this to be the type of game that may came out of the gate a little bit slower, but continue to grow over time.”
He added: “We’ve got a bit of a head start, people have an understanding what music games are, it has the ‘Hero’ brand on it. But at the same time, people don’t know what a DJ game is, they don’t know what you’re supposed to do. Our strategy again is to focus on in-store demos.
“If you look at Guitar Hero 3, which to date has been the most successful Guitar Hero game to date selling 12 million units, it did take three iterations to get the game out there and for people to know how it works.”
That’s the “DJ HERO SOLD 12 UNITS IN THE US LAST MONTH” headlines headed off, then.

Activision: DJ Hero can help the music game genre grow

Activision feels that DJ Hero can help the music game genre grow due its focus on users who don’t necessarily play Guitar Hero.
“With the kind of diversity DJ Hero offers, we expect it to appeal to people who may not have yet discovered the Hero franchise,” senior brand manager at Activision Ian McClellan told MCV.
“The key is that the music – which comprises of over 90 mashups that are unique to DJ Hero – is still very accessible. This game will grow the category, so retail should expect this title to bring even more music-lovers into their stores – some of which may not have bought a music game before.
“Again, the investment behind this title will be at the level that they have come to expect from the Hero franchise. We believe trial is going to be very important. We are planning some heavyweight ways to introduce people to DJ Hero.”
Big Bossman Mike Griffith has said pretty much the same thing
once before.
Game’s out at the end of the month.

DJ Hero pre-sale spikes are good indicator for 2010 DLC

DJ Hero franchise boss Dan Rosensweig has told GI.biz that pre-orders for DJ Hero currently very promising, giving the publisher the backbone to plan 2010 content and in the future being a “tent pole” franchise.
“Pre-order sales of Guitar Hero continue to do extraordinarily well – you’re seeing DJ Hero in particular… we were very loud in June when we announced that Jay-Z and Eminem were having a relationship with the game itself – they spiked up very high,” revealed Rosensweig.
“As major mainstream press is now writing this as one of the top five games you have to have for the Holiday Season, the reviews are beginning to come out… I think we saw a huge pre-sales spike of DJ Hero last week, and as we build to the launch you’re going to see that rise to a nice high number just like Guitar Hero did. We’re really excited about that.
“Our complete expectation is that this is going to be one of our tent pole franchises – we already have a 2010 slate that assumes success of this product.”
