Happy Birthday PlayStation 2, you are almost old enough to drive

Amidst all the GDC 2015 hoopla today, we forgot to wish PlayStation 2 a Happy Birthday.

PS2

The system turned 15 years old today, going by its March 4, 2000 launch date in Japan. It was released in the west that autumn, and had shipped 100 million units in less than six years post launch.

PS2 became the best-selling console of all time with over 155 million units sold worldwide as of March 31, 2012. It sold over 48 million units in Europe, and over 50 million in North America. It sold best in Japan, though, with 21.5 million units moved as of October 2008.

As of 2012, over 1.52 billion units of software for the console had been shipped, and boasted a library of 10,828 games.

PlayStation 2 shipments in Japan ended in December 2012, with the console being discontinued a week later.

Happy Birthday, PS2. And thanks for everything.
