Here’s the reason Halo: Reach and ODST aren’t in the Master Chief Collection

Wednesday, 11th June 2014 15:32 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Halo: The Master Chief Collection features just about every single Halo game made. Fans of Halo: Reach and Halo 3: ODST may be disappointed those two entries aren’t included, but there is a valid reason for the exclusion according to franchise director Frank O’Connor.

Speaking with OXM during E3 2014 this week, the 343 Industries boss said the focus is on Master Chief’s story and that is enough for now.

“The honest reality is that we had to cut it off somewhere, so what we needed was for the near-narrative of the Master Chief saga to be there,” he said. “ODST is a side-story, Reach is a prequel, they didn’t need to be there. So if you’re going to cut things, you should be trimming the fat.

“I wish we could have done it all, but it would have been impossible in the timeframe we had.”

For Xbox One owners and fans of Halo, the collection will serve as a plump lead-in to Halo 5: Guardians, which continues the Master Chief saga in fall 2015.

A beta for the shooter was announced during the Microsoft E3 2014 presentation this week, and fans can try their hand at it come December 5.

Halo:The Master Chief Collection will release on Xbox One November 11.

So are all the games remastered in the Halo 4 engine? 1 through to 3? Or is it Halo 1 in the Reach engine, Halo 2 in the Halo 4 engine, and just Halo 3 as normal in 1080p? Anyone know?

@Triggerhappy I think it’s indeed like that (H1 with Reach, H2 with H4 visuals and H3 with higher rez).

Reach will be getting a standalone HD remake for XB1 (possibly bundled with ODST), just you wait.

@Gheritt White – I bloody hope so. Reach was one of my most played games of the previous gen. Can’t say that about H3 or H4.

@Gheritt White : HD remake? So now we’re going to do HD remakes of HD games? o____O
What’s next? We’re going to do remakes of current gen games on the same consoles?

    …no it won’t.

Forget Halo Reach not being worth a HD remake gameplay wise (if they were going to do one it’d be of 3), it’s already HD. Halo 1 and 2 improved dramatically with a fresh coat of paint, Reach won’t and there will NOT be a remake.

@Kreion Yes, it will, but not for a while yet. And when I say HD remake, you all know what I mean – HD remaster or somesuch, Sheesh.

Halo 2 just got one and that was out on the original Xbox – the only time Halo Reach is going to get one(if ever) is when the NEXT cycle of consoles come along.

REACH fand ODST are actually among my favourites. With Reach being in my imaginative Top 5 list of last gen games. They hold up well though. Bungie went for pretty clean, stylized visuals for halo. Especially these two have a very clean look.

@Kreion No, that’s not true. Halo: CE was updated for X360, after all.

Reach will either get a 5 year anniversary edition, or be used as a stop-gap between numbered Halo releases.

I disagree – Halo Reach does not look bad enough now to require a new version, hell Halo 3 still holds up imo. I don’t think it’ll look bad enough in 5 years to require one either – plus Reach doesn’t have…anyone asking for a HD remake. People wanted Halo 2 because of the multiplayer – no one want’s more Reach multiplayer.

Based on the trailer it looks like the remake is actually going to be part of the story. It seems to me someone trying to connect with the Master Chief is going through his files in co-operation with the Arbiter. The MCC actually seems like it will play into Halo 5 in some way.

@Kreion It’s not about whether or not it’s necessary, it’s whether or not it will sell. And it would, especially if MS have a gap in their Halo content release schedule,

Right so Halo 1 Anniversary (previously re-made in the Reach engine) is untouched @ 1080p…
    Halo 2 on the Halo 4 engine @ 1080p…
Halo 3 (on the Halo 3 engine obvs) @ 1080p…
… and Halo 4 untouched apart from being @ 1080p.
Wow, some confusing stuff going on there LOL. Personally I’d like to see 3 touched up slightly, but I suppose they had time and money working against them. Anyway, looking forward to this.

@Triggerhappy Would have been nice for H3, but not too necessary. H3 was on 360 and still holds up pretty well.

@Gheritt White I’d have to agree with you. Notice how he said, “and thats enough *for now.*”

    @orakaa

HD remakes of a HD games? HAAAAA!!!

You crazy console gamers classing (NOT EVEN FULL) 640p and (NOT EVEN FULL) 720p as HD…

    Halo 3 = 1152×640 no Anti Aliasing
ODST = 1152×640 no Anti Aliasing
Halo 4 = 1152×720 with 2x Temporal AA (which is terrible, those jaggies are still present and disgusting)

See that there, thats a AAA 360 exclusive franchise failing to hit HD from its launch date to near the end of its life cycle with little to no technical improvements, take from that what you will.
