Ubisoft holding back finished Wii U game until console sales improve

Tuesday, 10th June 2014 11:55 GMT By Dave Cook

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has confirmed that the company is sitting on a finished Wii U title until sales of Nintendo’s console improve.

zombiu

It follows confirmation last May that ZombiU 2 prototyping had begun. We’re not saying this is the mystery game, but it seemed for a while that Ubisoft was getting properly invested in Wii U, and then it took a step back once sales cooled.

Speaking with Polygon, Guillemot said, “We did adapt the number of products to the level of quantities that the machine did. So we will have Just Dance again which is well suited for the machine. We’ll have Watch Dogs. We have another couple of products that we are waiting to launch, specifically we have one game that we wait for the machine to be more mass market to launch.”

How many Wii U consoles would need to be sold for Ubisoft to release the title? Guillemot added, “We don’t have a number. We need the sales to increase so it becomes more and more mass market then we will have the volume that will justify massive marketing and TV marketing.”

“Nintendo is really coming up with fantastic games,” he went on “They could, with the right price and very good games, help the machine start selling.”

And if Wii U doesn’t secure the desired sales, Guillemot said the game, “could never come out. It could come out on another format… ”

There you have it. What do you make of that one?

I read title and all i hear is “Ubisoft are holding hostage an unreleased game for Wii U, unless these terms are met.” Of course it makes perfect business sense but increased install base will not alter the poor adoption rate Wii U gamers have against third party titles. If its not Nintendo, get out and head to Microsoft and Sony camp.

    Seems to be perfectly logical,

Ubisoft are in the business to make money, Watchdogs may very well be different enough for Wii U owners to buy it up and Just Dance could move standard numbers later in the year but most other titles they took the risk on simply didn’t pay off.

I must admit, the title in question is a ‘family’ title so more than likely it was just Rabbids rather than Zombi U 2, I bought most Ubisoft titles when they came out new on the console to support the cause – I enjoyed the Assassin’s Creed titles on the machine and also Rayman but people simply didn’t buy them and they only have themselves to blame for Ubisoft not supporting Nintendo.

The biggest shame is that the ‘other’ Assassin’s Creed is skipping it this year.

That’s a bit like telling your girlfriend you won’t marry her until she loses weight, but you won’t go on a jog with her either.

It’s one big vicious circle. Ubi could release the games and thus help the Wii U sell more consoles, but instead holds games back citing lack of console sales.

Furthermore, if there are games that are complete, how long long do they really intend on sitting on them? Because at this point they’ve already eaten the cost to develop the game. They could release it and recoup some of that cost, or sit on it hoping for a larger user base, meanwhile making no money at all while letting whatever game it is become dated. Brilliant.

For a company I used to love, it’s sad that now I can’t even remember the last game I bought that was put out by them.

He is obviously waiting until Smahs Bros and MK8 to come out and help move Wii Us but the problem is that most Wii U owners don’t buy enough 3rd party games.

@Digital Bamboo Exactly. If they don’t think their game is good enough to sell consoles, why is it being talked about?

Surely putting more software on the console will improve sales, no? This seems like a silly move to me.

This is like that one paradox….
You can’t go in the water until you learn to swim.

Although Nintendo’s Wii U is failing to move units for several reasons, the most prominent one is certainly the lack of a stable install base. If Ubisoft released this said game, then it would increase the already growing number of games for the U, therefore allowing it to move more hardware units.
