GameStop to close 120-130 stores as it shifts focus away from games

Friday, 25th April 2014 10:01 GMT By Dave Owen

GameStop is moving into what CEO Paul Raines describes as phase “3.0,” which will see the retailer focus on “gaming-adjacent” fields such as smartphones and tablets. This means the chain will be less reliant on video games.

This means that between 120-130 GameStop retail locations will be shuttered. Instead the company aims to open between 200-250 Spring Mobile stores and 20-25 Simply Mac stores.

GameStop currently has 6457 gaming retail locations worldwide, so there will still be plenty of stores in which to pick up your games, if you’re a bricks-and-mortar kind of person.

My guess is Gamestop is doing this because XBox One’s original intended policies to kill the used games market were a warning sign that Gamestop can’t rely on games to remain a viable market for them. They’re essentially shifting focus so that they don’t get screwed over completely when the shift occurs.
