PS4 sells over 300,000 in first two days on sale in Japan – report

Tuesday, 25th February 2014 05:47 GMT By Brenna Hillier

The PlayStation 4 managed to shift a pretty decent number of units in its first two days on sale in Japan.

According to Famitsu, the PS4 sold an estimated 322,083 units during its first two days of availability in Japan.

The PS4 launched with just two days remaining in the Japanese sales week of February 17-23; it’ll be interesting to see if the console cracks half a million in its first full calendar week.

Famitsu’s sales figures aren’t as well-established as chart tracking firm Media Create; generally, the two sources paint a more reliable picture when taken together. Media Creat’es report is likely to surface overnight.

Rob went along to check out the PS4 launch in Japan. The punters he spoke to seemed pretty excited about the new console, which finally arrived in Japan after several months of availability outside Sony’s home territory.

Prior to its Japanese launch, Sony announced the PS4 had sold over 5 million internationally. The console is “generally sold out” in many territories, although Sony is working to ensure a steady supply of stock.

Thanks, Johnny.

    As expected.
Funny how Wii U, Vita and 3DS all had ~300-400k opening in Japan, leading to vastly different ltd sales.

On a side note, with this PS4 has probably taken Worldwide lead in next-gen . Last time the lead changes hands this gen. PS4 all the way it seems.

350k were shipped so, it’s a decent number but nowhere near the craziness that PS4 experienced in other territories. Also, no as bad and deserted as Guardian’s article described.
Not bad, not great. Just mostly decent.

    “350k were shipped”
Where did you get that number?

“nowhere near the craziness that PS4 experienced in other territories. ”
Well, everyone should have known by now home consoles are dropping off in Japan. Anyone expecting more was just misinformed.

That is very good. I expect a drop off in sales though due to shortage mostly.

@The_Red its actually is pretty good, considering japan is not the biggest market, and the fact that the UK sold 250k its opening weekend, the US had more than a Million its opening weekend. 350K is a really big deal, just by population numbers a third of the US and a third of their sales. its a perfect opening weekend.

I don’t know why i’m surprised this trend has been happening in other regions, but i honestly expected things to go differently due to Japan being Japan. So i expected worse than what i’m seeing.

Good numbers, glad to see the PS4 sell well over there. I don’t think M$ has a hope in the world in getting their X1 to sell in Japan lol.

    @polygem (#13)

Yes, and so does platform philosophy. The PS4 so far seems more gamer centric, while the XB1 has gone more toward the set-top box demographic. I have all my passive media and communications covered already. I only need a console for gaming. I suspect many, many people worldwide feel the same way.

But if doesn’t matter. Because sales don’t matter. What matters is to not worry about sales and to have love and rainbows in your heart.

    And hypocrisy in your words.

300,000 looks pretty underwhelming to me given performances elsewhere. The beginning of the end of the home console in Japan?
