Xbox One Games with Gold news coming soon, says Spencer

Monday, 3rd February 2014 10:24 GMT By Dave Cook

Xbox One’s equivalent to Sony’s PlayStation Plus free game incentive should be announced soon, according to Microsoft’s Phil Spencer.

It follows claims that Microsoft is seeking legal action against a leaker who exposed Forza Horizon 2′s Xbox One release window, Halo 2: Anniversary’s launch date and Crackdown 3 for 2016.

Now, regarding Xbox One’s Games with Gold incentive, Spencer had this to say on Twitter:

Dead Island is currently free on Xbox 360, as part of Microsoft’s scheme. It currently offers two free games a month to gold subscribers, but could the Xbox One version offer more? Let us know what you think below.

It’s not really an “equivalent”. It’s different ;)

In Germany it’s Metro 2033 at the moment. Great game, a pity that I already own it :/

well, hopefully they won’t spurt out useless indie titles that nobody would play otherwise if it wasn’t free and we would have to say they are really cool afterwards because nobody wants to admit they are crap.

@pukem0n there is reason why indie games sell so well in the recent years, people love them.

I played many indie games which are far better than some AAA titles.

Its great for Xbox players that Microsoft wants to copy Sonys PS+ games, would be awesome if that becomes a standard for all systems.

Because the games with gold program is giving you Xbox players such amazing games lately…

You would be lucky to get some indie titles over the old bargain bin garbage they are trying to shovel…

I just hope they continue the free game for the Xbox 360 for as long Sony does for the PS3 or even longer.

So its moving over to xbox1 but how would that work, they wouldn’t do them free esp since the xbox1 hasnt even been out a year so technically when it starts i go buy an xbox1 and get a gold membership every xmas and never buy a game. Theres a backlog of games i want on the 360 but now i dont buy them just in case they are free next month.

@drewbles82 And that is why these programs are terrible for the industry. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard my PS3 owning friends say, “I’ll wait for it to be free.” And now that GWG is doing the same thing on the Xbox, it’s doubled how many freeloaders are playing games with little payment.

It’s like a Steam sale but with even less payment.

    @antraxsuicide

    Terrible for the industry? Hardly.

Xbox have giving nothing but bargain bin games which have been out years to the Gold customers
PS+ is a lot better and is an optional cost, if you want “free” games pay them a yearly amount and they will give you a few semi-old games, what is wrong with Sony doing that?
The developer’s no doubt get paid by Sony to put the games on free for the month anyway so nobody loses.

And with you saying they are terrible do not tell me that counts for Steam sales, if you say Steam sales are “terrible for the industry” you need to wake up.

@Panthro I don’t think you understand. $50 a year = ~$4 a month. To be split among ALL of the developers who have games on PS+ each month. That’s a problem.

A developer recently posted an article about how Steam sales were negatively affecting his bottom line. Nobody (I mean NOBODY) buys games at launch anymore on Steam. “I’ll wait for a sale.” Too many people are doing this, but at least with Steam sales, the devs get something.

On PS+/Game with Gold, they get jack. They get the change in your couch cushions. That’s it. That pittance isn’t worth the lack of initial sales that hits when a game launches. I even know some PS4 owners who straight-up didn’t buy anything, because they know they’ll just download free titles instead. How is that good for the industry?
