Xbox One: major update to address Xbox Live service, interface & more

Thursday, 9th January 2014 08:57 GMT By Dave Cook

Xbox One major updates have been discussed by Microsoft’s chief product officer Marc Whitten. He has confirmed that feedback on the console’s user interface and issues with Xbox Live will be addressed in the future system updates, among other things.

The comments follow confirmation that over 3 million Xbox One consoles have been sold to date.

It comes from an Engadget interview with Whitten, during which he acknowledged complains aimed at the Xbox One interface.

“The feedback we’ve gotten is pretty valid,” he began, “some of the social stuff is hidden or harder to use than it was on the Xbox 360. So you’re gonna see us come out with an update where, well, we’re going to fix those things. As a person who’s been pretty involved in building Xbox Live for the last decade, I take it pretty seriously when people say it’s harder to get into a party, and the defaults aren’t right, and I don’t like the model.

“So what I’m trying to do with the team is kind of theme some stuff up. Let’s take an update and really go through a big list of what we’re hearing from customers, what we know is broken with the architecture, areas that we want to improve or complete. I think that’s a theme you’ll really see us push on — that Live experience.”

We reported on Xbox One Twitch streaming last night, and revealed that the broadcasting service is still waiting to hear from Microsoft about when game streaming is coming to the console. Whitten was also quizzed about the feature, to which he replied, “This is not 100 percent. But my general strategy at E3 is to talk about things that are gonna happen from that E3 to the next E3. So, we are not yet to the next E3,”

Do you feel that complaints made about the Xbox One live experience are valid? Let us know what you think below.

Never mind the convoluted menu design, but does it have to feel so damn sluggish? The spinning wheel, while waiting 5-10 seconds every time you want to go somewhere, belongs in the past. Makes the whole console feel tedious.

@3 Every time I think it can’t get worse, it does. They don’t even tell you when someone comes online? Seriously?

    Wish there was a PS4feedback.com!

    @5

It’s the same for PS4. I assume it’s because of increased friends list size, so people don’t get spammed, but it seems really short sighted.

Well yeah! There are a lot of features that are not yet implemented, so at the moment the Xbox One Dash feels abit Sparse…

Things such as, no “view all” page for things such as Demos in the Store, as well as no “Genre” search on Xbox Video. At the moment, most items in MS Store, are only tagged under “New Release” “Most popular” “Highest Rated” and so on.

Also I like my tiles, such as games & Apps, to be static. At the moment everything is stacked based on “Recently Used.” Yes, there are pins. Though the option to customise their positions manually would be great.

Also. Has anyone noticed that there is no actual, directly accessible, Memory Manager???

@6 Maddening. You would think notifying you when the people you want to play games with are online would be the first single feature you would implement. If nothing, add a manual option so that you at least get online notifications for people you want them for.

Still early. In a few months all this will be a thing of the past.

@8 Or at least give notifications for people on your favorites list. These thugs are common sense. Not sure why it wasn’t implemented from the start.

need to fix the friends list too. dont like the only thing that differentiates a friend playing on xbox 360 and xb1 is 1 or 2 things such as:
    1. The little (xbox 360) bracket under their name and game playing.
    2. The fact that they (if they set it) have a much larger gamer picture, the 360 users have a small square of their picture in a larger white square.

Things to also fix, when im on xb1 i cannot party with users on 360; im ok with that, but at least make a filter to xb1 friends (online/all).

And last but not least is the ability to send voice messages. That for some strange reason just doesnt exist anymore or im slow and havent found it.
