Ryse: Son of Rome: death, gladiator co-op and the Colosseum – video

Friday, 30th August 2013 15:04 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Ryse: Son of Rome will contain co-op in which two gladiators can enter the Coliseum and battle an ever-changing rush of enemies. During gamescom, project manager Yannick Boucher showed VG247′s Sam Clay just how deadly it can be. Video is below.

Players won’t be going in without protection though, as the game gives players the ability to customize their gladiator’s armor, weapons, shields, and consumables.

Each of these items will be earned through victorious combat matches and entertaining the audience – the main purpose of the Colosseum.

The more enemies you slaughter in this arena, the more the audience entertainment meter fills granting you fame.

At the beginning of the video you will also notice the “dynamic tile sets”, which are movable tiles which contain hidden obstacles and scenery. These provide the player with a variety of battle scenarios to keep things both interesting and challenging.

At launch, the game will contain 11 multiplayer maps for you to battle in, and you won’t have much longer to wait – Ryse: Son of Rome is an Xbox One launch title slated for November.

Somewhere out there, an MS exec just got a sudden erection.

the graphic is really good, but that doesn`t mean anything when the game looks slow and boring.

Graphics look good but the gameplay just looks dull. Hopefully it’ll have some epic set pieces to compensate for the repetitive gameplay.

looks pretty meh in terms of gameplay and graphics. Nothing new to see here, pretty boring to be honest.

@11 And you provide no rational argument, yet again!

How can you call someone a Sony Fanboy just because they don’t find the game interesting. I would understand you calling them a fanboy if they were comparing it to Sony games but…they didn’t.

Sure your just not mad because people aren’t jumping up and down in joy for this game?

Jumps to the Pokemon themed assumption they are Sony fanboys because they are not interested in the game, brilliant!

Games graphics look outstanding other then the flaming swords at the end.
I dont see anything slow about it other then the player obviously sucks. I enjoy my games more realistic pace and not dart across the screen like batman style which is fantastic in its own part by the way.

@2 It’s a gamepad game now, with some Kinect features.

They announced it at E3 this year.

@15 at what point are these graphics good? The art style is pretty decent, and its without a doubt NOT authentic by any means. Your telling me that in Roman times that had hydrolic moving floor coming up out the ground with random things attached to them to make the fight more spontaneous and fun!? Surely not!

The graphics look plain, textures look pretty low, I saw clipping on the main characters clothes that was so obvious and in plain sight its a wonder they haven’t fixed it straight away and there was plenty and I mean plenty of jaggies on screen meaning a lack of AA was used. Showing just how weak these new consoles are in a world filled with technology moving at a much faster pace than static hardware console. I bet in five-six years time we shall have smartphones/tablets with equal or more graphical horsepower than these new consoles. Just google Nvidia Project Logan and see for your self… and that’s what they can do now!

Nice to see at least some limbs coming off in the finishing moves.

It really annoys me that bladed weapons in most games are basically used as a blunt instrument.

I look forward to seeing a game where swords actually cleave flesh, sever arteries, & partially cut off limbs, not because I’m psychotic and love violence, but because I think it would make for very nuanced and interesting gameplay.

don’t want to be that negative but i really have to +1 #4 and #5.

i like the idea and concept behind this game but it looks like they focused too much on the mainstream. it looks shallow and not deep enough gameplaywise.

i would have loved it to be more realistic. this guy has been axed a hundred times in this video without any consequence…why implement a blocking mechanic then?

well, you can’t judge a game you never played but i don’t feel like buying it. what’s left to play on launch now?

the guy that demos it speaks volumes about what audience they are having in mind.

“so got this guy here, got that guy here. boom!
got this guy here, got to get the timing right, boom!”

    yeah man, boom, man.
