Ouya game sales “better than expected”, “reasonably profitable”
A couple of indie developers have spoken out on how their games are selling on Android-based micro-console Ouya, with the general consensus being it’s worth the effort.
Edge asked three developers for a report on the new platform’s performance, and received mostly positive replies.
The least enthusiastic response came from Nimblebit’s David Mash, and despite his reservations about the platform’s revenue-generating powers, he did not seem reluctant to praise Ouya.
“I would wholeheartedly recommend the Ouya to indie devs that have an existing pipeline to Android and are interested in what the OUYA does,” he said.
“It’s probably not going to be a huge source of income compared to other platforms, but it’s dead easy to submit a game and get it into the store.”
Nimble Quest generated 6,508 downloads, 122 purchases and $427 profit in its first week on Ouya.
Knife Media co-founder Jack Shiels said Red had been “reasonably profitable”.
“We broke even within two and a half weeks, whilst sales are currently sitting at just below 400,” he said.
“Right now that doesn’t seem like a whole lot, but there aren’t a significant amount of Ouyas out in the wild right now. I reckon by year end we will have a clearer picture.”
Meanwhile, Towerfall developer Matt Thorson revealed he’s made about 2,000 sales of the $15 brawler.
“Sales have been surprisingly high for a new game on a new console. Launching on Ouya got me a lot of attention, and the sales have been better than expected,” he said.
Towerfall is now on its way to PC as a result of its success.
